Mobile First? Do we have to start...

Boy, I am running into A LOT road blocks with the new version. It appears that when you start a new project, the only option is to build mobile first. Can I change it to build desktop first? I have a hard time thinking the other way.

Thanks :)

You can only do that by taking the slider up to the largest breakpoint you can, but you will run into all sorts of problems with styling later.

The other option is to disable the breakpoints (Toggle Breakpoints)(all breakpoints)take the the slider up to where you feel comfortable do your design, then restore breakpoints to "default" that way your design is there then starting at the lowest point, make styling adjustments for that breakpoint (widths/spans/colours etc etc)

it's still not easy, but it really helps get you into the mindset for designing mobile first

try it on something very simple first a couple of columns with images & text etc just play around for a couple of hours, that moment will come

If it helps any, I used to start by disabling breakpoints and still do sometimes depending on the project. However, I am steadily moving more towards fully developing mobile first. Practice makes better!

Did you know that Web Form Builder can be used for both simple and complicated forms and that it's not limited to the default fonts and buttons? Take a look at a form we developed for WindowTinting.com.

I think its been mentioned before, if you own RLMP you can build a layout in Desktop Down format and save it. Then just open that in RSD and continue with your site building. Of course you will not be able to use any of the fancy prebuilt components of Foundation Framer or Bootstrap Builder. But you can build your own components.

The part I struggle with, is that I have a couple clients who send me desktop mockups and expect to see something very close to the mockup when they see the finished product on their PC. Working desktop down, I could reasonably do this. Then I'd adjust the layout to accommodate the smaller viewports and they would give those a cursory glance and sign off on the finished product.

However, starting with mobile first and trying to reverse engineer THAT into a clone of the mockup... not so simple.

Yea it works well if you disable breakpoints but it is kind of a pain because when you re-enable them and you move back to mobile version you have to redo all your styling. My advice still is if you are stuck on doing desktop down I would use RLMP to do your desktop mockup then save it and open it in RSD then you will have a desktop down layout to use.

Having a mobile-first mentality is the way forward, I think. I must say, when you've been brought up with a desktop computer as a child (with no smartphones around then), it's very easy to see that as the first port of call for your design considerations. But I do believe that starting with less and building up is a better way of doing things — it just takes a bit of getting used to. It's best to get into the habit, because frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation are based around this concept.
