Trial software tribulations - Post ID...

I am trying to check out the trial software prior to purchasing. I am having severe trouble using the trial version.
So, on computer 1, I have installed 9.6 Build 375. It shows three tabs at the top - Code Editor, Visual Editor, Preview. The Visual Editor shows "this feature is only available in the full version...", and allows me to "download a 28-day trial". I have yet been able to install anything which shows me how this visual editor works. The software is installed in c:\program files (x86), and shows up in the start bar as you would expect. This computer runs WIndows 7.

On computer 2 (which I plan to install the paid version), I tried to download the 28-day trial version and ran the installer as administrator. The software got installed in the admin account's roaming directory, so my user account (where I plan on running it) is not able to see it, and there are no shortcuts anywhere. I tried to re-install as the user account. I do have the CoffeeCup Free HTML editor shortcut on my desktop, and it opens an editor, v9.7, build 465 (free version), Day 1. I do no t have the tabs at the top - Code Editor, Visual Editor, Preview, but it has only the filename. Also, I am able to add the servers, but I am not able to upload anything to the servers because the server I just added is not visible in the upload screen. This computer runs Vista.

I am a bit frustrated, and am holding out to see if my wife likes it enough to buy it, but can't figure out how to install it so I can show her the visual editor, and give the ability to upload files.

Please help! Thanks,

-Kevin

As non of the more technical users are about yet, i only use the VSD (visual site designer)

I think you are trialing the HTML editor, worth confirming, but that being the case, i believe the latest version NO LONGER has the visual editor option

If you want a WYSIWYG (ie) no code, try VSD

you can import from VSD into HTML editor to tweek your work

HOWEVER you can not import from HTML editor into VSD

hope this helps with less hair pulling

Started using CC VSD in January 2009, I don't do HTML code, Sales from CC site exceeding expectations taken me out of semi-retirement

Version 9.6 is a pretty old version of the software. At that time, it did show those 3 tabs. They were removed about 1.5 - 2 years ago from the software. Neither the Free or Paid version has a visual editor anymore. Instead, use Visual Site Designer. That is our visual editor.

Also the free version does not have an upload capability at this time. I believe they are working at changing that sometimes soon though. No visual tab though (trust me that the coders here love that they took that away as we got a lot more features for our projects!).

Hmm, that is really disappointing, on all counts. So it looks like the new software doesn't install into program files, but on a per-user basis into the roaming directory, the upload capability went away, and so did the visual editor. I have already checked out the VSD and since there is no import facility, it is pretty useless for anyone who has an existing website. Seems like a deal killer to about 90% of their target audience.

No import == deal killer.

You have control

The Visual Editor has been gone for a LONG time now. That is not something really new. ;)

You however do have the ability to FTP upload in the PAID version. Just not the FREE version (it is free after all). You can also choose where to install the Editor during the second step of the installation. It does default to the APPDATA folder, but you have the option to change that by selecting where you want to install it.

Well, I have a web site I designed from scratch, but my wife would like an editor for it. I seem to have no options with cc software if there is no way to import into a WYSIWYG editor. Seems to be a shame the visual editor is long gone - seems like what I am looking for. Any chance to buy an older version which still has it? I suppose based upon your reaction it is no longer supported.

Maybe I will check out Amazon or Ebay before I get *a different editor*

Thanks for the response.

I bet your wife could whip together a site with VSD faster then you can find an editor that will full import your existing site exactly the way it is.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Before you make a decision take the VSD trial for a spin. I did and I was at first taken back as it looked like a kids program but all of a sudden I had a web site. Previously I used Notepad. After that I purchased VSD full and as I haven't fully given up my desire to code I purchased the Editor as well.

I only build sites for myself and I could not find anything quicker. If I was in the web design business I would probably use a combination of the two programs.

There is not much other than responsive sites you cannot do with VSD and I am confident someone will have a fix soon
