Sites edited in CoffeeCup don't show...

Hi,

I have a weird problem, where the edits to sites that I make In CoffeeCup, do not show when I upload the file.

I use FileZilla and CoreFTP but the same issue applies. I edit the website as I want it, but when I upload, none of the changes are reflected in the display, even though they look perfect when I finish my CoffeeCup editing.

I've done some web research and people seem to have been having this problem as far back as 2006. I've cleared the cache in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, but to no avail.

Does anyone know of the cause of this issue and how I can fix it?

Many thanks, Ross O. Storey - +61 406 774 964 - rostowen@gmail.com

I'm assuming that the CoffeeCup program being used is Site Designer, but the principle involved would apply to some of the other programs.

I think the most frequent cause of this matter has been that only part of the changes made have been uploaded to the web server. When changes are made to a web page, these usually involve not just the .html file but also at least the main.css file.

I find that safest thing to do is to ensure that I upload everything when changes are made, and not just the file I think I've been working on.

I would also say to use your ftp program to delete the old files first then confirm they are gone by checking website then publish new files.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Some web hosts also seem to have some kind of delay in showing updates of a site. Although, I haven't experienced that for quite some time, so maybe (hopefully!) it's a thing of the past.

How about cached pages? Maybe all that is needed is to refresh the page in the browser when changes don't show.

This is a frequent problem when you have server caching set up for your account. For example, if you use GoDaddy’s website security, part of what they do is put a copy of your site on an external cache (CDN). This helps protect your site because if a hacker tries to get into it, they are not breaking into your actual site. It also helps speed up the delivery of your site to your visitors.

On the other hand, because your site is being served off of a CDN, when you pull it up in your browser you are not looking at the files that you just updated on your server. You are looking at the last version that was put on the CDN.

The CDN is refreshed periodically and that is when your changes will show up.

Back in February I started using BlueHost to host one of my websites. It wasn't long before I realized I was having the same problem as Roscoe (updated pages not displaying on the website after uploading them). I use the professional version ipswitch's WS_FTP_12 to upload my files. After uploading pages I could see (in WS_FTP) that they were successfully uploaded because I could see the files' date\time stamp. However, when I viewed my website (using using a variety of browsers) all I could see were the old files that had just been overwritten! Today I spent considerable time with a Bluehost service tech who was less than adequate. However, she did mention that the BlueHost cache might cause a 24 hour delay in newly uploaded files actually being displayed via a web browser. I didn't fully understand what she meant. I now think what I'm experiencing on BlueHost is the very thing that Brian Durfee a in this thread on March 15. Thank you Brian for the explanation. I have been creating websites for 23 years, but this is the first time I have come across the problem.

I would love to know what intenet provider Roscoe is using.

I have several sites on Bluehost and have never seen a delay that long. Maybe 60 seconds.
