One thing to consider about domain names is what people will "tend" to type when trying to find you. I know when I am about to look for someone's site, or some business's site, the first thing I try is theirname . com to see if I can get right to them. I'm going to bet I'm not the only one, and I don't bother to try the rest of the popular domain suffixes after that, I usually hit google from there.

Just something to consider when you're trying to decide on which suffix to purchase. I always go with .com simply because it's what people will usually try first. Just my opinion on it, but hope it helps :)

Well over here in the UK i tend to buy the .co.uk version & .com just to stop some blighter buying it to try and sell it on to me at a later date for thousands of pounds.

I also find that the few orders i get from abroad find me through the .com address

Trouble is I have had spammers buy the .info version and then send out tons of spam, trying to blacken my name (possibly competitors)

One thing I would never do again ( made mistake once see link ) is to buy main domain inclusive of hosting with the likes of JH, they wont give it up easily if you change hosting, and then stick some nasty advertising, or worse try this example :: http://www.chauffeurdrivenluxurycars.com

Now i am telling everyone not to host with JH

I buy my domains from http://mydomain.com which I've been with for years. Pay a little more than some places, but in the end it's cheaper when you add the prices of privacy setups (which used to be free all over and now cost as much as the stupid domain names or more .. sheesh ). I don't host there, just buy domains there. :)

Privacy is still free with domainmonster . com
and they have just started hosting from £1.50 $2.50 per month
Good after sales, support in line with CC
And easy to set up CNAME records for S DRIVE

Thanks Viv, that actually may have given me some major food for thought. I hate changing companies since I know I can trust the one I'm in and have worked with them for so many years, but.... it's definitely cheaper, been around for almost 6 years and does include the high priced protection that I see on most major domain sites (mydomain, godaddy, etc.) which charge ridiculously for that service. Thanks for the share, I bookmarked it and will go check that out later today :)

Have a gander at their renewal prices, unlike most they DO NOT hike prices at a later date.

I thought google were starting to favor your Countries domain extension in their searches, expecting you'd want to focus on local traffic primarily? So, if located outside the US, like Viv, you'd be better with the co.uk, and so on for your Country, otherwise, .com, .net 2nd, is best imo. Unless you don't care about local traffic, and are focusing on something that is more a worldwide product/service. :)
