@Jo Ann, don't feel alone --I have plenty of crummy days, and plenty of good ones too.
Just an idea -food for thought-
You can create a site for your area that has business listings.(your own list site)
The list page has categories.
Each category page would list the businesses and each business has a link to 'their page'.
Their page could be one of your subdomains, but it's not really a 'must'.
Each business could still work on their page using an FTP account to their folder.
Their business page would be what ever they want, like a business card but much more.
Each business page would have it's own 'text' 'content', meta keywords, meta description and so on.
--Lots of this depends on what your business plan is and if they are paying for something and what are they paying for. Are they paying for a account with access, or a listing that you will be creating for them. Maybe membership is xdollars a year and has 3 updates included or xdollars and they do it all. Many people just have no clue about posting content or web pages.
Just for example of business pages, some created by myself and some by the user:

Do you have a google webmaster account. The webmaster account has lots of neat features and I recommend it.
Ranking has a lot to do with 'content', having a good xml sitemap will help too.

DMOZ is easy, find the right category and suggest the url.
While your there, see if the category has an editor, if not, consider applying for the job.
I don't know anything about bing and don't care much about it.
The big picture is that we all want to see you and everyone else for that mater have success.
