Redundant containers, paragraphs,...

I'm pretty ignorant about web creation. I do maintain two sites using Site Designer but am probably pretty ignorant. Basically, when I want to add or choose a style name I see a bunch come up that don't appear to exist in my website. For example, I have a "container-1" name but have not been able to find a page where it is used. Is there any way to search for it? Is there any way to delete it if I don't need it? (Just to remove unnecessary stuff that complicates things.)
By the way, I don't see a Search box for the forum. Maybe someone has asked my question already. But I couldn't see how to check on that.
Thanks!

When you create a web page in SD and pop in a container without giving it a class name, as soon as you give it some styling it gets the auto-generated name 'container-1' The next container without a given class name will end up as 'container-2'. The same happens with any other page element you add, like 'paragraph-1', 'picture-1', 'html-element-1' etc. To avoid this, you should give the elements your own specific class name. You may also change the names later if you want to. You have a wee search thingie at the top of the element tree where you can search for the names.

There is a search facility for the forum too, but not at the top of every page. You need to go out of the forum topics to https://www.coffeecup.com/forums/ to see it.

Hi
Which version of 'Site Designer' are you using?
there is a search box on the newer versions in the 'ELEMENTS' tab
you can enter a search request (ie container-1) and it will show all the containers matching that search, you have to do it for each page,

Normally site designer clears out UN-used class names periodically, so if a class name (container-1 still shows, then that would indicate it exists somewhere.

once you locate it on a page if it doesn't contain anything, or isn't part of the layout (ie a spacer) then save your work before deleting it. If by deleting it, the layout goes skewwiff, then close the project file WITHOUT saving it, you can then re-open and the container will be back again. (BY THE WAY, CHECK EVERY PAGE first in case its on more than 1 page

wahoo Inger beat me too it this time ~ :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Thank you for the responses. Yes, I have used the search box. It's very handy. But only one page at a time and so it gets a bit heavy going having to repeat the search for every page. And yes, initially I was not naming my created elements. Now I do. So I imagine these redundant ones go back to the beginning of my work when I was a total newbie. I would like to remove them but they seem to hang around.
As for the forum search, it would make for simpler usage if it was on the top of the page.

If they are still being listed in the drop-down that means they still exist somewhere on a page. Nothing more you can do except go through each page until you find them then decide what to do with them

It's worth remembering the last item before Layout in the Styles panel. When one instance of a class has been found, it lists all the pages which include that class and has arrow buttons to move between those pages.

That last comment is very useful. I did not know that.
But there is one thing I have with one of my websites. If I go into a paragraph to change the font for a few words, e.g., italicize, and click in the text class box I find about 80 styles labelled "paragraph-text-#" where # is a number. How do I find out where those are used? And how do I remove them if they are not used. As far as I can see few of them are currently being used.
Thanks!

Best practice to use, at least its one that I use, is to create a class for the element the very first time you add it to the project. So if I drag a paragraph to the canvas the first thing I do is goto class and name it before any style changes are made. For example I would name the class to "main text" if I add a heading I will name it "main heading" or "call-to-action" Then when i go to add any similar elements to the page you will select the new class name you just created.

I use this practice for every element I add to a project. It makes it very nice when you want to change something and have it automatically update the entire website.

When in the text-edit mode in SD you may have seen the 'Inline Tag' near the top of the tool pane. If you want just to change some words in a paragraph to say bold, italic, monospace, quote and some more, you can mark the words and click on the button for the format you want to use. You won't get any funny class, it just puts the tags for <em>, <strong>, <code> etc around the selected words. (Just be aware that some of those don't work in Materialize, it has been reported).
If you want to change the font-size, font-family, colour and such, I'd say follow Steve's advice.

I think the situation regarding those automatic Edit Mode classes is unchanged since the discussion in the thread at https://www.coffeecup.com/forums/site-d … t-classes/ . I know of no way of finding them easily, but my experiments in February did establish that some clearing up of redundant ones was found to have occurred when SD5 was closed and re-opened. Just keeping SD5 running but changing to another project doesn't seem to have the same effect.
