Drag and Drop Elements - Not working...

Site Designer is a great program. I'm enjoying the learning part but I am extremely frustrated when I try to drag and drop an element into another container on the canvas. Sometimes it doesn't go where I want it to. I've tried using drag and drop on the canvas and the element tree and can't get it where I want it. For example, I'm trying to follow the tutorial about building an Orbit Image Viewer and I cannot get the list element where it is supposed to go. This isn't the only example, just the most recent. It's difficult enough to learn the Site Designer, and it sure doesn't help with these frustrations getting in the way. Can some one please help me with this? I did read some work arounds in the Tips section but I didn't really understand them, and anyway this should be a simple thing to do. Why is it so difficult?

Thanks,
Robert W

Hi Robert I find that happening to me sometimes too especially when you have multiple containers. I often goto the Element tab, find your element you want to move and drag it under the container you want it to go to.

Open the Element pane. Use Ctrl + up, down left or right key.
If you have containers below each other, say we call them a, b and c, and if you want c to get inside b, select c and click on Ctrl + arrow-up key.
Then you have the sequence a c b. Keep c selected and click Ctrl + arrow-right, and c will go into b.
If you change your mind want want to move c out of b, select c and click Ctrl + arrow-left.
You're then back to thr acb sequence.
With Ctrl + arrow-down you can move c down to the bottom again.

Inger,

That's not working for me. I'm using a MS Surface laptop and I assume by arrow keys you mean the ones on the bottom right of my keyboard (see attached image). When I select an element in the element tree which is right above the container I want it in, and press Ctrl + right arrow key, nothing happens. I'm really frustrated that a problem like this is working against me learning the app. Anyway, thank you for your reply.

I have a sort of solution to which I have a shortish video demo, but it depends on which version of Site Designer you are using

Robert, I don't know what the difference is between a 'surface laptop' and my 'ordinary' but just 1 month old win10 laptop. Does it by any chance mean that the arrows are added to keys that also have other kinds of letters or symbols? So that you need to activate the arrow keys, and maybe also the number pad by an 'Fn' key? If so, try Fn + Ctrl + arrows

I cannot test it, but Googling 'surface pro arrow keys not working' finds a number of suggestions that seem to have cured the matter for others. It seems to be a common problem.

Thanks everyone for your help. Through a combination of all the advice given I have completed the Orbit Image Slider tutorial and it works. Individually:

Inger - I don't think there is any difference; the "Surface" designation just refers to a MS Product family. It is just a new Win10 laptop. I know the arrows keys are working because I tested them on MS Excel and they move the cursor from cell to cell. It seems sometimes, in SD, they work the way you describe and sometimes not. Very confusing.

Wayan - Nice solution on your YouTube presentation. I found that very helpful. Thanks. I couldn't have finished the tutorial without your help.

Frank - I did Google that too but decided the problem was not that my arrow keys didn't work - I tested them on Excel and this forum and the keys do move the cursor as they are supposed to do. They just aren't working consistently in SD as described by Inger. I don't know what's going on there. But I was able to work through the tutorial (Orbit Image Carousel).

Again, thanks to everyone for your help. I am struggling with learning SD but I am making good progress.
