Breaking an RSD site into two sites -...

Hi,

I have a website that is larger than the allotted page allowance in RSD. How do I break the site up so that I can have two separate project? I thought I did it right by doing a save as and then renaming the project so that all the CSS would remain the same, but it appears to be messing up the CSS of the 'other' site when I upload the other one.

Thanks! :)

Hi Spoon,

Yea I ran into this issue too the first time. What you need to do is store it in different subfolders on your server.

I have a client that has to be broken up into three projects. So what I did on my server is create to more folders, one called sub and the other sub-sub. Its a bit tricky and may require you to use absolute urls in your menus and links.

Project one would go in the root folder, project two i would upload to the sub folder and project three I would upload to the sub-sub folder.

Keeping these files separate will avoid css conflicts.

You may also want to figure out a way to break it up so it makes sense to you. For example above my client sells New and Used trailers along with Misc other things. I have the projects broken up that way too. One project for new, one for used and one for misc.

Note: if you change any of the styles in one of the projects you will have to open the other 2 and change it on them too.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

Okay, that is what I was afraid you were going to say. I think it will be okay for this particular site. It is a carport site and the whole main site fits in one file. Where I am running into issues is that we are building a page for every state they sell carports in (a total of 40) that makes the original file too big. I will just put all the state pages in a file of their own. They aren't actually linked anywhere in the site, but I will still have to change the menu on them to absolute url's, though. They are basically for the search engines.

Thanks so much!

I am trying to avoid that as well, I was Really hoping RSD2.0 would be out by now with more pages!
But, not yet and no confirmation of how many "more" pages it will have..
Thanks, dave

If every state page looks the same and only the main content changes, you could make the template in RSD and then manually create the pages after export. (I've done this for a number of projects.) It could actually make your work easier and quicker.

1. Create your state page as a layout that will be used for every state. Call it layout-state.html
2. Make sure all your body content is in place (pictures, text, etc.) in layout-state.html
3. Click the drop-down for Pages and choose Manage Pages. Make a duplicate of layout-state.html and name it template-state.html.
4. On template-state.html, remove all the main content from the body.

After you export, use HTML Editor (or whatever editor you prefer) to add your state pages. For each state, make a copy of template-state.html and name it for the state. You can then manually put in the information in the body.

This method gets around the file limitation of RSD and, done correctly, makes entering state content quicker. In RSD, you have to edit each paragraph individually. If you already have the state info typed up, copy and paste it all into your editor and then add the appropriate html tags around the paragraphs.
