Autosave files?

Just wondering where the autosave files are stored (default location)?

Did extensive work and forgot to save. Crashed. Didn't realise it had been so long since I last saved, so I ignored the prompt when re-entering the program.

I believe it is saved in a temporary file,, which unfortunately if you didn't choose to load the prompt is deleted ( or cleared) upon loading the project. and the project is then loaded from your last physical save. I am not 100% sure of this but I also once did that (thinking I had done a physical save just before it crashed) I tried looking for the auto saved file no joy.

One can, of course, use Nirsoft's free utility (FolderChangesView) to monitor such things. The impression I get is that the autosave facility may not create just a single file, and that what it does save could scarcely be used by the normal user except via the recovery prompt mentioned in previous posts.

Since thankfully I don't know how to cause a controlled crash, I don't know what happens to one's normally-saved file when the prompt is accepted. If, as I suspect, it remains unchanged until one makes a further normal save, perhaps it would be better if RSD did an automatic recovery of the file as at the crash, and then offered a prompt asking whether you wish to revert to your own last normal save. Such a procedure would presumably have avoided Bainn's problem.

Hi Frank

I believe that is what RSD does,, if you don't accept the prompt in other words load the project as of last manual save, then it loads the project as of your last manual save.(in the message it sort of says that) If you accept the prompt it opens the project as of the last Autosave, (which is every 10 minutes (I believe) so the most you would lose is 10 minutes or less work) If he had accepted the prompt, then he would't have lost so much. Not sure if it would be possible to recover the file as & when the project crashes, but if it can be possible then thats something for them to definitely consider

Hi Wayan.

Thanks for that. If indeed accepting the recovery option doesn't affect the last maually saved file, then one can have the best of both worlds by always accepting the offered crash recovery, and doing an immediate 'File Save As' using a different name. One will then have the choice of
(a) the recovery file (which one created by File Save As) or
(b) the last file manually saved
after one has had the time to consider carefully which is going to be most useful. As Bainn indicated, it is always possible to make the wrong choice in the heat of the moment.
