I'm editing a large HTML file. Using preview, I see something that I want to change. However, it's difficult to find the right spot using Code Editor.

Is there some way to mark a spot in Preview and then go directly to that point in Code Edit?

Hiya Hugh,

Unfortunately the HTML Editor doesn't have that capability. There are many here that can help you though if you're stuck on trying to find where a code needs editing and many will answer quite quickly.

I too wish it had that capability, it's the ONLY thing I really miss from the old Dreamweaver I used to use and it was super handy and helpful for trying to find what you needed to edit.

Hollar with a link to the site if you want some assistance in finding what you need to edit, myself and many others are on the forums quite often and I'm sure one of us will be able to give you a hand pretty fast :)

No, I can do it myself via a search without any difficulty. It's just that I'm lazy, and if CC would allow a direct jump it would save a step and a little effort.

Why doesn't it have this capability, BTW? It can't be that hard to implement.

It is actually quite complicated. When using the visual mode and positioning your content visually, the editor creates its own code in order for you to do that. By switching back to just the html editor and using standard html can then mess up the proprietary code that was put in place by the visual side.

Eric,

I don't think Hugh is using the Visual Editor. He is referring to going back and forth between the Preview and the Code Editor.

Sounds familiar. Before I retired, I used to marvel at statements like this from clueless designers who would come to me with a job and tell me: 'This is just a little job - it shouldn't take too long.'

Of course, they didn't know how to do my job or how much time is actually required to do it well and correctly. :/

Actually this is a feature that has been asked for by quite a few people already, many that have used Dreamweaver (like myself) and similar programs are missing this feature. It's not a matter of just switching back and forth between the code and visual tabs, but even the normal Preview window when you have it open in some of the other HTML editors have this built in. When you click on some element or highlight something in the preview window it automatically scrolls the text in the code section to that location and highlights it. It saves a ton of time searching through your code, and as with our HTML Editor's preview window you see it change as it happens (without the extra lag that HTML Editor causes to do the previews).

I know I miss that feature, and although I don't expect we'll see it anytime soon in CC's HTML Editor, one can hope. With as much work as has already gone into the program, I would think this would be something they are capable of doing and can see the use of adding. :)

On a side note, I see no other reason to bother even having the visual editor in the HTML Editor at all if it isn't capable of working together with the code editor in this way. And as I've said already in other threads, it's more of a pain in the arse for everyone else that has to explain why you can't switch back and forth than it is worth the use of it.
Those trying to switch back and forth are those that are expecting it to do what has been asked for in this thread. Not unreasonable at all when you think about it.

I agree Jo Ann:

1. Remove the Visual Editor completely from the program (i.e. don't just 'hide' it)
2. Look into the possibility of adding some kind of "location matcher" between Preview and Code Editor windows, which is what Hugh was looking for in the first place.

Not that I have ever used the VSD bit of the HTML Editor but I can see that it could have a use for those who have a website in html that they need to edit but don't know any html.

However it it would be less confusing without the two associated together when they aren't good friends.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.
