I created a minimal web site with VSD, then edited one page with HTML Editor, then reopened the page in VSD. Did not see my changes. Does VSD ignore edits to pages not done with VSD? If so, that seems like an easy to implement feature (to accept a page as it is) and very useful.

Anytime you make changes outside of VSD, they will always be lost when you open your website back up in VSD.

We have to keep strict control over the HTML markup. That is what allows us to build the website. Parsing custom HTML files can be extremely tricky, especially if the HTML is invalid.

You can edit the pages that VSD outputs in the Editor. However that change will never be saved in VSD.

It is a feature that will probably never be implemented into VSD. :( Due to the fact that VSD is for Visual Design only and the Editor is for coding design.

You can use the HTML Tool to insert HTML Code. But you can not edit the page you are currently working on.

Cannot you not open the html tool and edit the contents you insert or add extra. I agree you cannot edit changes made to the page in the editor but you can edit html you insert in a html tool box.
