Am looking at my site and wondering whether I need to improve my page titles. Am already aiming to use more keywords in them to be more specific, but do I need to use spaces or hyphens when changing VSD page names in the properties box.

For example
should I enter mark-the-magician or mark the magician for the best SEO keyword use (not that I would use that for a page title)

Thanks

Mark , i just replied to your other thread re this : http://www.coffeecup.com/forums/designe … e-ranking/

You will get many different opinions re all of this, i have proven for myself that things like

markthemagician as the id so you get illusistration.com/markthemagician.html works fine and someone typing into google local magician will work to find illusistration.com/markthemagician.html

So if your page title, says mark the magician your local illusionist in hertfordshire

And you have a page illusistration.com/hertfordshirepastoralmagician.html

google will find illusistration.com/hertfordshirepastoralmagician.html

so better still if you have illusionist.com/hertfordshirepastoralmagician.html

if someon types in illusionist & magician in hertfordshire they get :

illusionist.com/hertfordshirepastoralmagician.html

where you add the keywords in VSD add the same title as your page title, and add the whole lot at the bottom of your page

see this example

http://www.chauffeurdrivenluxurycars.co … gcars.html (one of mine)

you probably know this, but if not if you look at my page source you will find that pages keywords and heading., (developer>source)

try google search for wedding cars in any local town to Amersham : chesham, chorleywood, croxley, rickmansworth, moorpark, little chalfont, chalfont, you will get the message i hope

Although what Viv says is correct, if you do decide that you still want to use something between the words, a hyphen (dash) would be the proper way to go about it today. Used to be either a dash or an underscore, but things are changing again and the dash is the most acceptable one to use now. The underscore is still usable mind you, it's just better SEO to use the dash.

Also, you should always separate the words. Google will look at your links and be able to read them, but will take off because it makes it hard for your customers to read.

In Viv's example illusistration.com/markthemagician.html

It should read illusistration.com/mark-the-magician.html

Thanks all,

Viv I'm with you, I don't have the time to learn code well enough to produce a good looking site, which is why I like VSD. As a full time teacher, but part time magician I need a website I can easily manage and update, at minimum cost. I used to use publisher which was great til it produced non-compliant pages. I'm happy enough to insert some HTML where I need to, but don't know how it works, just glad it does!

As to page titles, I am going to use hyphens, to make it easier to read, but wondered if VSD automatically retitles what I enter as a title as it seems to on some pages, especially in safari? Is this an inbuilt feature to render correct titles or just fluke and I do need to change them?

thanks again

PS Viv, my wife wondered why I'd been searching for 9ct gold signet rings! It's a good job she didn't see the car searches too!

I am off on holiday hopefully when i get back i will have a check around your site and see if i can input anything else suggestion wise.

I am no expert, but those searches you did probably made the VSD H1 H2 necessity or not clearer :)
