Yes, you can add code to VSD through the HTML tool on the left hand side toolbar.

I use CC Photo Gallery to do the same thing. When creating the slide show you need to make the background transparent and remove most of the buttons, but it is essentially the same thing. Check out one of them here: http://www.stbonifaceschool.net/ If you look around the site(s) there are a few others too.
