Hi, I am trying out the trial of CC editor. I used to have Dreamweaver and was told coffeecup would be a good alternative.

However I am trying to open a .dwt file in coffeecup, which is a Dreamweaver template. This file is used for making global changes to all my pages. However I am unable to open it. I see it in the tree on the left side as I used to in DW but when I double click it it does nothing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I doubt very much that you can open a Dreamweaver template in the HTML Editor. You need to open it in DW, then export it/save it as a web site, and then you can open it in the Editor. There you can also save it as a template.
