Subdomains vs subdirectories - Post...

Hi! I have been using Visual Site Designer for quite sometime for a website I created for my father's hobby business. It has been great, as I really have no experience in working with HTML.

My father now wants to run a hobby expo for other enthusiasts to exhibit and sell their items. He wants a seperate website from his business site, but since this is something new I thought setting up a subdomain might be a better idea. (If it goes well, I can move to a dedicated website later).

My question is, if I have to add a subdirectory to my main website for the subdomain to be pointed to, would it just be easier just to add the whole expo information as subdirectories in my main business domain and leave it at that?

Thanks for any help!

If your using VSD, setup your sub domain by changing your publishing settings to point to a folder.:)
Example: public_html/nameoffolder/
Your links in your main site would be made to point to http://mydomain.com/nameoffolder/
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Using directories is easier in the end but using sub-domains can be beneficial for SEO. Google it and you will find many articles on the matter.

Thank you for the advice. I have another question (actually maybe more - LOL!).

When I go into VSD, it asks me whether I want to open an existing homepage or create a new homepage. Should I create a new homepage for the new information that will be in the subdomain, or just add the pages to my existing homepage?

Also, can I set up subdirectories for the subdomain? (Ex : pages for directions to the venue, contact information for vendors, etc.) It seems like alot of extra pages to add to my main website. How do I redirect subdirectories for the subdomain?

Thanks!

Create a new home page. That will become the index page for the sub-folder so when users type mydomain.com/nameoffolder/ the homepage will open.:)

I don't use VSD but my advice would be to make this a new project entirely and upload it to where you want, either a sub-directory or a sub-domain. You can still link the two via menus. The reason for this is so that it will be easier to move when you get the new domain. This way all the images and other stuff VSD does will be separate by project.
