Does anyone know of an excellent theme for a gardening club. If it allows for members to sign-up/log-in and some selected advertising, all the better.

Any theme can be tweaked to accommodate your particular look. As far as the login part you have a few options. You could use either CC's WAM or Password Wizard program, or you could grab a php login script off the net and tweak it to fit your page design.
