You might also explain it this way: In some companies you have a server that has all the programmes that is needed for the employees to do their work. The employees have a link on the computer to the applications, but the programmes are run from the server. The IT responsible has to maintain the server and create a user for each new employee. It has been like this for quite some time. Now, with the cloud system, the 'server' is lifted out of the physical company and put somewhere with access for everyone who has a license. There is no need for every company to have each own application server. It is taken care of by the 'cloud system', which consists of several servers, or 'nodes' around the world, and thus is much more reliable than a local server that may fail. In the cloud system, if one server fails, the other ones take over its job automatically, so there is no downtime. Besides, the cloud system is faster, because of everything being mirrored to lots of nodes, your programme is sent to you by the one nearest to you.
