Character changes after upload to...

I may be overlooking something obvious, but I'm only recently started using S-drive seriously, and was surprised to discover that file names with spaces (%20) uploaded directly, using the S-drive site, removes the spaces, so 'terms and conditions' becomes 'termsandconditions', but this does not happen with FTP!

Also, English £ signs (ASCII 156) appear on my web pages as a rectangle.. :-(

Any thoughts appreciated.

I can't speak to your issue with the English signs. However, filenames should NEVER have spaces. FTP is trusting that you are following the correct standards and don't have any spaces, but it will do whatever you tell it even if it means putting a file on the server that has spaces in its name.

On the other hand, Coffeecup is great about is helping users to stick with web standards. Their software and services are made for both the professionals as well as those who are new at creating web sites. I'm guessing that's why S-Drive removes the spaces.

You need to remove the spaces from your filenames.

First let me say I agree 100% on the removal of the spaces, but...

As for S-drive removing the spaces for you... that should not be happening. I don't know if it's by design, but when I upload a file to any server I expect it to show up exactly how I uploaded it (granted I don't have spaces in mine but...). If I were to upload a file and it has a space in it and I wrack my brains for the next X number of hours/days trying to figure out why my files are not being found, read, etc. only to find out that the server I'm using is taking it upon themselves to "help" me, I would be extremely upset at the waste of time it caused and most likely find somewhere else to host.

Just my 10 cents on it. Hopefully it's just something they are not aware of. I would definitely put a ticket in and ask them about it and please come back and let us know what they say. :)

We do not rename any pages Francis. You would need to provide more information. What program are you using, how are you uploading etc. The more specific you are, the better we can help. However using spaces is a BAD IDEA. Don't do that. That is like web 101 stuff. Spaces are not your friend. They are the enemy... ;)

Do not use £. You should be using the HTML entity £

Thanks, all. I'm not that keen on spaces myself, if only because %20 looks so horrible, but it took me a while to work out what was happening. I get sent files to post on a community website, and they often contain spaces in the filenames that get preserved when I convert them to PDF. Now I know it's a problem, I can deal with it.. :-)

Thank you Scott for the £ advice. You can tell I'm a beginner...
