Can I Rework My Old Site?

Hey All,

I have a site out there but I haven't done anything with it for a looong time. So I've forgotten most of my way around site manipulation. What I wanted to do, to update my site, is to open it in CC and rework it. But when I try to open the site, CC wants to know where on my computer it is located. I don't have a copy of the site on my computer anymore... Is there a way to open my site in CC editor by just using the URL? If not, how do I copy the content of my site to my windows PC? Do I need to buy an FTP program first so I can load the site onto my comp and then open with CC?

Thanks for any replies!

If you site is still online, you can go to the site, right click and choose save site as.

Another method is if you are using the HTML editor, click file open from web...

Or...

If you still have access to the website files on the host. Just simply download the files.

Hope this helps.

OK SirAGE,

I tried 'save as' but it didn't hve the proper .vnu extension so that won't work. I was trying to use your VSD program. So I guess I'll need to use the HTML editor to modify my site as it is. Yes, it is still on line (radiocycle.net) and I used Frontpage to create it years ago. I was hoping to get away with using the WYSIWYG but looks like I'll have to brush up on my HTML again. Thanks!

Yes, if you want to use VSD the site has to be redone. You can not import a created site into VSD. But if it is that old, you should just start over with VSD...

If it wasn't done too many years ago, check your server to see if you have a backup of the .vnu file there. I am not sure how long ago CC added that feature to the program, it's been quite a while ago, but check and see. If it's there then just download that file and you should be good to go. You may still need to download some images (should anyways), and maybe reassocciate some images to their proper areas, but it should be intact for the most part.

If that backup isn't there then yep as SirAGE already said, restarting is your only other option.

Thanks Jo Ann,

Well the site was done with Frontpage, so no .vnu files. But let me ask you this now that I have your ear; using VSD could I make a site that is nearly identical in form and function to what I have now, if I still have all the pics? It's 'radiocycle.net'.

Radio,

You can re-create your site in VSD. I would consider getting an SDrive account as well to take advantage of the Stream, easy uploading and other features; all designed to play nice with VSD.

Anyway, go to your site online. Right-click on your images and save them. Highlight your text and save it in notepad (or something similar). After you get your VSD page layout done, just insert your text and images, then tweak as needed.
You can use CC's Direct FTP to grab other files you might need.

By the way – create a folder to save everything to, so all your stuff will be in one place ready to go :)
