I may be incorrect, but I believe the icons are all just placed there through the html, while the gray background you see behind the links and the link's text are applied through the CSS as a background image. I believe I remember seeing the action as a JavaScript on dynamicdrive.com. If you find the file all of the deployment instructions should be included. Hope this helps.
