Hello,

I would like to make a travel blog or journal. The trip is over and I want to write something that happened every day together with some pictures. I also want a link to a foto gallery, because I have a lot of pictures. Speaking of pictures, I have about 30 GB of them so I will have to store them somewhere (cheap)

Thanks for any help.

Hiya Marc,

The blog part is easy, use CoffeeCup's S-Drive. If that's all you put there it's free, easy to setup and it's easily used inside a website that you might have hosted elsewhere. You can even put a website there for free too if you keep it pretty basic.

You can use Photo Gallery for your photos pretty easily, I know S-Drive is/was working on adding this, not sure if it's available to the free accounts or not though so you'll have to take a look. Just click the S-Drive button on the top menu.

If you're looking for an outside place to host your site we do it pretty cheaply if you want to check out LB Websites in my signature. There are lots of really cheap places to host your site if you want to check elsewhere. I would give a Google Search a try as there are many more than can be listed here.

Hi Jo Ann,
Thanks for the quick response.
A few observations and questions:

To my knowledge, I can be wrong the blog part is easy to use IF you stick to the themes available. If you go hard core it ain't easy (for me)

Can a photo gallery point at images not hosted at the at the coffeecup S-drive? As I said I have 30 Gb of them.

Thanks for pointing to the LB Websites, I will contact you if I don not get on my way.

Regards,
Marc

I use Piwigo for all my Soccer photos. Several thousand.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Don't know why I didn't realize you said gb not mb for your photos lol. Not sure how much space Piwigo allows, but that could be a good option for storage of the photos.

I would definitely try some google searches. S-Drive doesn't have a plan that large either, but they may be willing to alter a plan for you too, I'd ask them also.

The photo gallery will work with images stored on another server. You would need to alter the .xml file to point to the location of the images, but that's pretty easy to do since you would need to put the full URL into the path for each image.

Having said that, it would be an extreme job to do that for 30gb of images. I can't imagine the number of hours it would take to do this. On the other hand if you have good skills for Find/Replace setups, then you could theoretically use the HTML Editor to find and replace all the paths to include the correct ones. There are lots of ways around it I guess is what I'm saying so yes it will read images stored on other servers.

So many options lol, but I'd definitely search around before settling with any host to make sure you'll be getting what you need for the best price.

I think for the web you will want to resize your photos to about 800x600 and adjust the resolution to about 96 dpi especially if you have like a 10 - 16 mpix camera. That way instead of loading a 10 - 16 mbyte photo you will be loading a 100 kbyte photo. People won't have wait a few minutes for each photo to download to view them and if they have any artistic value no one will benefit by right-clicking and downloading them. And you will find that S-Drive will work for you.
