phone nbr link to skype - Post ID 150648
When I put a phone number in a text box on one of my page headings, it automatically creates a phone nbr with a skype link.
The skype nbr is very small compared with the address text and my customer is unhappy that it is not the same font size.
Is there a way to enlarge the skype box - or simply not use the skype link?
Thanks,
Camilla

Hiya Camilla,
the first thing we need to know is which program you're working with. That will help us much better to figure out what might be going on and where to tell you to look for issues. Also if you have the site uploaded a link would be helpful also (if not it's always a good idea to do that to see what it will really look like as you design it, and helps us to help you better too).

Camilla, I've had the same once when I had Skype installed. It annoyed me so much that I uninstalled Skype. It even 'converted' other numerical figures to the Skype number format, even though they were not phone numbers.
I think you'll have to look in the Skype settings, or even ask your question in a user forum for Skype users. I don't think there is anything that can be done in the html code, except perhaps having the phone numbers represented as images.

Camilla, I don't think that your web design program is causing this. It is far more likely that it's displaying this way because the machine on which you're viewing the page has Skype installed, and the Skype toolbar has been added as a browser plugin. This causes the type of display that you're seeing.
You can stop this by disabling or uninstalling the Skype toolbar in your browser. Without the add-on, phone numbers should display in the font and style that you specify. It should not be necessary to uninstall the Skype application, itself.
Also, it should be noted that there's no way you can control this behavior on other computers that have Skype and the toolbar installed, so you'll have to try to make it clear to your customer that this is not a function of your design and that it's beyond your control.
Incidentally, the Skype toolbar has been responsible for a sizable percentage of FireFox crashes of late, and Mozilla has temporarily blocked the use of it in the latest version of FireFox in hopes that the Skype developers find and fix the problem.

Thanks for all the help. Skype came installed on my new laptop, but I don't use it. Had no idea it was my machine! Will disable it.

Thanks, Shunned, You explained this much better than I did, and part of what you wrote was new to me too. I didn't know it was just the Skype toolbar that was the culprit.

My pleasure to be of assistance, Inga. I hope the information was accurate and helpful.
I use Skype occasionally and think it's a terrific application -- we found it a very handy mechanism by which to communicate with our son, who was stationed in Italy for the past couple of years. .
For anyone interested, here's a link to the Firefox information page that describes the problem that this extension has been creating. Apparently, similar problems have beset Internet Explorer over time as well.
Again, to be clear, it's the extension, aka toolbar, that's causing both the original poster's consternation and the Firefox crashes -- not Skype, itself.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
