Jo Ann,

I think what will work best as most domain registrars let you park your domain there and you can just redirect it to the subdomain without pointing servers as you aren't actually moving it to another host just redirecting traffic.

Yeah I was thinking that just a few minutes ago lol *hums the Twilight Zone Theme*. That's how I used to use my own domain for many years with all the bazillions of free sites I've used instead of parking it anywhere I left it at the place I purchased it from which is usually Mydomain.com and then used their free service to redirect the domain to the site. That may be an option also which might be simpler for sure. I'll still need to know how to do it the other way though for those that want to park it with us so I'll still look into all that, but the redirect may work much simpler in the end.

Just rereading some of this and realized what you meant here. I just went into my cPanel and see the redirect setup there. Although that won't work for what I'm trying to do since it is backwards, it will should work for the other issues I've been trying to figure out for my own site when using the SSI that we talked about in the other thread. That should hopefully come in handy at some point, I'll play with it a bit and see what it's like. Last time I tried to do a 301 redirect on my own site it messed with my Web Access Manager setup, but that was a manual redirect that was combined with a redirect that was entered by a plugin from Wordpress so I guess it was a bit complicated or something lol. Thanks for that tip, I may not have realized that was there in the cPanel :)

@Jo Ann, I think CoffeeCup has an htaccess book that should help, I haven't looked at it and don't know what it covers, but I have heard it's a decent resource.
htaccess is a powerful tool and with domain pointing and domain forwarding you can do just about anything.
If you need help with the htaccess, post the info and I will post the code..

thanks dave,

I have that book file now that I think about it, from quite a while ago, I'll see what it has to say as I wasn't anywhere near being able to understand anything in it at all before so I haven't even looked, but could be I might understand some scraps here and there now hehe. I forgot all about that actually, thanks for the reminder :)

well, with htaccess, it might be better to have a task in mind and look for the specific answer.. rather than learn everything about htaccess rules, because the combination's are endless.

yeah, just the redirects for subdomains is all I'm after at the moment. I'll take a look through and see what it has to offer, but if I can't figure it out I'll post again :)

no problem,, when you decide what you need, post the exact domains and the path to the site folder.. if you need to keep it private, use a contact form on one of my sites..

Jo Ann i found these people have a really good system for cloaked and uncloaked re directs.

http://www.domainmonster.com/domain-name/options/

I am using one of mine http://www.bestpriceweddingrings.co.uk in the way i think you are describing.

Though its pointing at a page in my main domain, it works for sub domains the same.

Started using CC VSD in January 2009, I don't do HTML code, Sales from CC site exceeding expectations taken me out of semi-retirement

Thanks Jewelcraft, mydomain.com also has that type of setup, and allows you to use it free even if you didn't buy your domains there (which I did lol) and I am pretty sure it does the same types of things as the domainmonster.com does. I will most likely write up a page on how to do that using that type of system and put it on the site for those that want to use domains, and then after I learn the rest of it I'll type something up for that too. I will definitely keep that site in mind though as it can't hurt to have more than one resource for it :)

make a subdomain in cpanel
http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/A … _Subdomain

add or create a redirect in cpanel
http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/A … a_Redirect

you do not need any outside resources if you have cpanel subdomains available, cpanel redirects and the option to have custom htaccess(hand written-typed). These 3 tools will do any kind of 'creation' and 're-writing' you will ever need.

the apache htaccess file is a "re-writing" tool that uses regular expressions. You can basically take any http request and re-write it to any thing your heart desires. --and-- re-direct that re-written http request to 'any' folder on the server in the path of the htaccess file.

I hope I said all that correctly..
and, I personally know an htaccess wizard named (Mikeytown2) if we need some professional help with the puzzle.
