It seems that there are a lot of them out there.
Any opinions?
Also, how does who I use affect the way that search engines collect data about my site, or is this even a relevant question?

I use Statcounter (www.statcounter.com) and Sitemeter (www.sitemeter.com).
I dont know how search engine are affected by them, i think it is not an issue. But the data collected by counters are very useful.
I was forgotting, you can also use analytics from Google (I use too).

Just my advice, but I would only consider a hit counter if you think you will have significant traffic. The reason is because people may come to your see possible low counter numbers and deem your site insignificant. Quite a lot of research out there about that.
The philosopher has not done philosophy until he has acted upon the mere conviction of his idea; for proof of the theory is in the act, not the idea.

You both have offered some good info. I think I'll look into google analytics, so I can monitor my traffic without announcing what a newbie I am!
However, can't you set your hit counter at whatever number you want to begin with, like ordering new checks?

It really depends the scripts you are using. If the content is stored locally, then most likely yes. If you are using a service, typically that information is stored in their servers and cannot be changed.

You cal always insert a invisible counter and nobody will see the data. I do that with Statcounter.

Yes, but Sitemeter allows you adapt your value for the case people wanted to imigrate from other counters and do not want to loose their old values.

Your hosting provider should offer some sort of stats program with your hosting. Webalizer or similar program.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

My hosting provider supply me the raw data (i download by FTP program) and then use Weblog Expert Lite to manage the data. Analytics and counter providers give us the data already formated.
We have a lot of solutions to choose.
