subfolder also requesting login -...

Hi,

I just used Website Access to password protect one of my sites. Used version 3.2, build 203 on a Vista Business machine (but the issue is really on the web). Let me describe the problem without giving the link (as I have removed the protection for the time being).

Everything works fine with the home page file (index.html in public_html) - it asks for the username and password as it should - and most of the subfolders are then accessible. However, a folder that is a forum, but is within /public_html, asks for the login information a second time. I notice that when I upload the .hta files, the .hataccess file is also uploaded to this forums folder. If I delete that file, I am still asked for the login information.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. If I need to, I can change passwords and username so others can see the problem.

Cheers,

Is the forum a wordpress blog? Are you using a separate blog software for the forum area? If so, then it will always require you to enter a second password since those scripts oftentimes have member and/or registration included.

Not always. Wordpress makes it possible to leave comments without registering or logging in.

I had thought about the issue of the forum asking for a login (it is an SMF forum) but that is separate and built into the forum, requiring a separate registration. What I am seeing is a request for login that is identical to what I see on the main page, before I can even get to the login page for the forum. I have the forum set to allow Guests to browse, but not post.

What I would do is run a test on another folder, that has subfolders with it and see if you get the same results. If you do, then it is something related to the software or configuration, if you don't then it must be related to the forum script.

Thanks Philosopher. I had done that both with this site, where there are five other subfolders, none of which exhibit this problem, and on another site with many subfolders but no forums, and found no problem there. So I agree with your analysis that the fault lies somewhere within the forum scripting, and I am off to their support pages if I can't see a problem in their php code.
