Windows 10 update trouble - Post ID...

I have got an icon on my desktop for some update assistant, and that keeps pestering me all the time. For at least 3 updates, the process stopped due to 'driver power state failure' and then the up until then version of win10 is rolled back. Now this thing (the icon) on the desktop tries to update every two hours or so, and I can't get anything sensible done. Does someone here know how to get rid of it? And better still, how to get around this drive power state failure?

Tom's Hardware website is usually a reliable help in such matters, and has a page about it here.

Thanks, Frank. I tried the solution suggested, updating drivers for the monitor, network card, sound, graphics etc, but that didn't help.

Thanks Inger. That's helpful to know, because I know someone who has a computer similarly afflicted. He didn't try that solution because of his very specialised graphics set-up. He believes the set-up could be affected by updating the driver, and could be very time-consuming to set up again.

I intend to remain subscribed to this thread for the time being so that
(a) if you find and report here a solution that works for you, I can pass on your findings;
(b) if he or his technical advisers find a solution which works for his computer, and let me know the details, I can post here accordingly.

Hi Inger.

It may be that your computer's problem has now gone away. If not, the following may be of interest.

The similar problem mentioned in my previous post was finally resolved by the technical advisers replacing the hard drive, which they believed to be faulty, and reinstalling Windows 10.

After they had done that, this Microsoft update article and fix appeared.

There is some background information here .

The fixes (i.e. the non-automatic update, or the adjustments to the Registry) in the update article mentioned above may be worth considering if your computer's problem is likely to have been caused as in the two preceding paragraphs.

Thanks, Frank, for following this up. I was not able to solve the problem, so I bit the bullet and handed the PC in to customers service at the place where I had bought it. After 2-3 days I got it back. Soon after I had booted, the same driver power state failure happened again! I called the shop and learnt that what they had done was running some Windows tools and done some security updates. They had not reformatted. We agreed that I was to give the machine back next time I went to town, which was today.
In the meantime I had experienced several of those wanting to update, then reboot, and If I let it reboot, it reached 33% and then cut out, restored the previous version. Once there was another error, with a code that I wrote down and gave the support people when I was there about an hour ago. And the last thing that happened, last night, after trying to update and trying to go back to the previous version for something like 3 hours without success, I gave up and shut down and disconnected the PC. I didn't want to fuss more about it, since it is less than a year old and under warranty.

So, we'll see what happens... Luckily I have two laptops, one of them a Mac and one Windows.

Got my machine back today, and it had been set up from scratch. Need some time to add in the progs again. I haven't had this nagging updating thingy yet.

I trust that will be the end of the problem. If, after the next series of Windows updates that proves not to be the case, it might be worth considering the 'Microsoft update article and fix' mentioned in my penultimate post.

Indeed. And if it happens a third time within a short time, and with a machine that is under a year old, I'll also have an earnest word with the people in the shop.
