I'm on DSL which goes through my phone company even though I don't have a land line at all. I don't pay extra for a line to have my computer on, they just set it up that way for computer use only. Maybe check into that if your internet is part of your phone setup or visa versa.

Some TelCo's do charge extra for DSL only service... I know the one I was with in NM was that way. DSL was $14.99/mo if there was phone service to the house. If not, they charged $19.99/mo AND if you decided to add phone service later, they charged an early termination fee and a reconnect fee unless you fought them on it (often took several phone calls to management level). TelCo's have always been legalized criminals.

Wow Phil, sounds like you've had some bad experiences with yours. I had no issues at all with mine. They had just started offering the internet DSL without phone service a few months before we decided to go for it and take out the land line. They didn't charge us anything extra, didn't charge us any fees for disconnecting the phone, no early termination fees etc. They were pretty good about it when we told them we aren't having a land line at all.

Wow I must be on a different planet! Or perhaps it's just that you're on the other side of the world from here and don't have to deal with Telstra (Australia's main TelCo).

Since posting, I've received a request to send a fax validating the draft layout of an ad in a police magazine, I'll email them a scan of the ad instead.

There's always Skype. The best way to use it is to have a separate router though. They have a fax service you can add I think. Skype cost 2.95 per line for service a month and every three months, the cost is 12 dollars for the number.
