This is so true.
In my old days as a consultant I used to archive on my computer old reports and documentation (for the purpose of re-using those reports in the future). Soon after I discovered it more time consuming to modify an old report than writing a new one from scratch. So most of my archives are in computer heaven now.
Likewise it's usually faster to build a websites from scratch (and get inspiration from other websites) than trying to modify themes or reverse engineer other websites. And you will learn a lot more doing so.
