I fully understand that the main part of this post isn't really anything to do with CC software, so if it has to be removed for not being appropriate then so be it.

I have (or am close to having) a commission to design a couple of web-sites (I will be using RSD - Menu Builder and the slider thingy, I have webformbuilder lite.) which is no problem for me having spent quite a while now going through and testing RSD,
HOWEVER,
The client would like to have on-line shopping included unfortunately CC shopping card designer (or whatever its called) isn't responsive so can't use that
He would also like to have a membership type of system which visitors need to sign into before they can proceed to order the items on-line.

This is the question, does anyone know of any available software that can be made part of the web-site, he doesn't want to make the membership a subscription based membership (in other words free). In fact something similar to the CC sign up that we have to do before we can join in community forum etc). I have done lots and lots of searching, but all of the ones I have found are for subscription based membership.

Subscription or membership all mean the same thing to me. If it's free or pay based is up to you.

what I meant by subscription is that just a simple sign up no need to pay to become a member.

I will have a try with your suggestion, but a complete idiot when it comes to anything like that, can you tell me what else do I need to set it up, how does the system know who is already registered, and where is the information to be kept.

The data is kept in a database.
There's several out the if you google free php membership script. The one I posted has quite a few features. There's simpler ones out there. Just depends on your needs. Take a look at a few of them.

If you follow the instructions correctly the script will install the databases for you.
