How do I do a say a colour column that spans outside my 12 spans?

So it goes all the way across the site - hope this makes sense?

Lost me. Do you mean a background colour independent of you 12 spans. If so background colour is set using grid. However not sure this is what your asking.

Tony is correct. The Grid is your full width background.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

You would need to use a full width row, with a subgrid or container for positioning of content. Unless you are talking about the entire viewport, then as Eric pointed out it would be the Grid.

Adam, that's what I'm after - just a full row that spans across the full thing. How do I do this?

Check the none box next to the Max-Width value. This will make the row span the entire viewport. You would then need to use a Container or Subgrid element (depending on your content needs) to center the content with the other content on the page.
