Fixed background for entire site;...

I have looked everywhere using your search tool and cannot find the answer to two related questions. I want to use a small gif as a repeating background for the entire site that will remain fixed as someone scrolls down the page(s). I only want it to act as a filler for larger viewports, and not to appear on smaller platforms. I also want the actual pages to be on a white background and centered in the browser, no matter the screen size being viewed.

I have tried clicking all of the things I can make show up (rows, columns, containers, elements), and sometimes can even select the grid, but when I apply the image for the background, it just fills in either the element it thinks I am looking at or the entire grid, overlaying the white I want to keep.

I am really a newbie to RSD and have done a lot of reading, but still can't see how to get some things to work! I HAVE hand-coded sites from scratch in HTML, then used GoLive, Dreamweaver, and CoffeeCup HTML Editor. I have also used Pagemaker, Indesign and Photoshop, so am used to formatting text. However, there is a lot I have to learn in terms of getting RSD to do what I want it to d, so please be patient with my questions. I am making progress, but slowly.

Hi, check my settings for the grid.Obviously you need to have the image in question placed in your resources folder.

I was already using those settings and I do have the image in my resources folder. I tried applying it and it shows up behind everything except an image that has a white background. If I color the elements white, there are still strips of background that shows through between them.

What I want is a solid white page (with content) that is a maximum width of 1000 pixels (or less) and to have the white page centered in the browser, with the colored background showing as a strip on either side when the viewport is wider than 1000 pixels.

In the example you sent me, the background image was at the bottom and did not show up as a stripe along the sides. It was only a strip along the bottom edge of the page. Also, how do I get the page to center in the browser on larger screens?

I don't know on what size screen you were viewing the file I sent. On my desktop monitor (21") I had the background image on both sides of the white background. When I narrowed the viewport, the bg image became gradually narrower until it disappeared completely, and you had just the white background. The bg image at the bottom is only visible because there was hardly any content on that test page I made. With more content, the images at the bottom will of course disappear.

As to the width of the white pane, you can set that as you prefer. I just used the default settings because you didn't specify any width in your first post.

You are mentioning an image with a white background. I hope you are not using that to create the white pane. Use a background colour instead.

Thanks! I "slept on it," and this morning the lightbulbs went off in my head. I finally got this to work the way I wanted it to. I also finally "got" what responsive design is, so am going back to square one and rethinking everything I thought I would do. I was still in the mindset of static pages, and still thinking decoration, rather than content. I DID understand breakpoints, containers and stacking, so this morning I am going to start at the beginning and move forward from there.

I love those AhhhhAAA moments. I think nearly everyone of us went through that stage when using this software. All of a sudden everything makes sense!

Good luck and happy building!

The future of web layout has arrived and it's called CSS Grid. CoffeeCup helps you to get ready with a free guide, the Grid Builder app plus cool demos & themes.
