just bought domain name, how long before i can use it becaue nothing comes up at this point.

Did you buy it at a hosting company? Normally it takes from nearly no time to 24 hours, and the hosting company usually puts some kind of temporary page there, which you are supposed to remove when you upload your own pages.

It can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for the domain to replicate across the internet. If you don't see anything after that I would contact your host and ask.

I mainly use web hosts in my own country (Norway), so I'm not sure about how it is in the rest of the world, but if your domain was bought at some registrar, who is not at the same a web host, then maybe you actually need to contact a web host, because you will need a place to 'put' your domain. Correct me please, if I'm mistaken here.

Two things as you were trying to explain one is the domain and where it is registered too, and the second factor which is not related to the time for replication, is where your website is hosted.

After you purchase a domain, no matter where from, it will take time to replicate across the servers. In my experience its always been 24-48 hours.

You will want to update your nameservers to your website host in the DNS settings of the domain. If you purchased the domain from your web host then these settings should be automatic. If not then you will want to contact your host, that is where you uploaded all your files, and make sure you get the nameservers updated on the domain.

I stand corrected! hehe! I am in fact used to domains being available for use within approx 3-4 hours, but ok, that's Norway, and especially one web host I've had a lot of dealings with. They must have spoiled me!

My one in Indonesia is almost instant. And I can pay at our local supermarket over the counter how's that for service

You can purchase the domain over the counter I have no doubt and get access to that domain fairly quickly. However before you could see that domain world wide, it would be hard to believe it is active instantly that is just not how replication and servers work.
