If you know what you are doing yes,, otherwise very difficult, so use the component that has dropdown already built in & style it to look like how you want,, that is way much easier. Or you can use the one like I did for my site

Thanks for the comments, for the moment I'm keeping it to just for anyone who might find it of some use,, I need really make sure that it is more easy to style & use for editing before reaching out further afield. One day who knows maybe it will appear. I believe also that Alter Eagle has a step by step tutorial on his page for something similar.
