Can somebody explain what Canonical Optimization is?

It is to help search engines know which page (or section.contnt ) is the original and which is the duplicated one.
This then helps search engines from un-neccessarily crawling / indexing the duplicated pages content/section)
It has no effect whatsoever for search engine results pages (Google doesn't mind ) but it will slightly count if any competitors website has a canonicial declaration. iy might decide to place that website a little higher on the results pages, BUT THERE ARE OTHER MORE IMPORTANT factors before canonical even comes into consideration.
SEO companies/people make a bit of a fuss about it, probably to help them make a bit higher charges
