Slight problem though is that is does not work with good old rubbish Internet Explorer!!

How far back do you need it? The method I described above works in IE9, but not in IE8, provided the rendering in the HTML Editor is correct.

Oh dear. It seems that the blend modes don't work in IE 11 or MS Edge.

Steve's idea in the second post of this thread is a good solution, but I understand the preference (in the third post) not to make the adjustment outside the context of the web page.

One could, of course, combine Steve's method with mine i.e.
1. use my solution to create the effect wanted;
2. temporarily hide the other contents of the Hero unit, and save a screen-shot of it;
3. use the screen-shot as the background picture.
