Basic positioning

I don't quite understand how to position objects.

When I start a new site with the default theme and go to the container with text, I can change its position to 'relative'. I can adjust the horizontal position in the 'position' tab, but if I insert values in the top or bottom box, the container does not move at all. What am I doing wrong? Should I go to the parent container and change settings here in order to be able to move the container with text?

I hope you can help.

2/Which "DEFAULT THEME" are you using

I just pressed 'new' with Site Designer v5...I think it's the 'Get started' template.

Is it the container hero-content-region you are trying to edit? If so, it has a 48px padding top and bottom, so it will not move up or down inside its parent container, but it will make the parent container larger if you add more content.

Yes - but removing the padding doesn't change it. I still can't position the 'hero-content-region' vertically in the container 'hero-section'. At least not with %.

I can, however, move it with px. Maybe that's the nature of the game? I am not sure why, though. % works fine when positioning horizontally...

Look at the parent container, the hero-section, and check the Flex settings. Change the Align items from center (that is the vertical center) to something else, like e.g. Flex start.

I did, but I still can't move the child container up and down with percentage in the 'relative' position dialogue...

That is not the right place to do it. Go to where it says Dimensions and give the hero-content-region some margin. If that container is too far up, try some top margin. Use the px unit if you want the same distance to the parent all the time, or % if you want it flexible.

The problem in the first post of this thread is interesting because there has been discussion of whether or not this is a bug, not in Site Designer, but in CSS definitions. Site Designer works according to the CSS rules. There is a page about this at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260348 for those who wish for extra bed-time reading.

It's probably best just to accept that this is how the styling is defined to work when the parent container's height is auto. When the parent container's height is defined, it does work.
