hiya cbrillow,
I'm going to hazzard a guess that you didn't include your subdomain as part of your address. This part depends on if you have full access to the entire domain or if you only have access to the subdomain itself. If you have a server like I do where you have access to the full domain and you have created a subdomain for your shop and then created a folder inside that subdomain, you have to access it using the full address such as:
if your site address is http://billyjoe.onlineshop.com then it would be:
/public_html/billyjoe/coffeecupshop
if the subdomain is actually the "onlineshop" and not "billyjoe" then it would be:
/public_html/onlineshop/coffeecupshop
Either way, both the subdomain and the folder you created for coffeecupshop need to be referenced in the pathway for the ftp section.

guys, thank you so much for your responses. i got so much valuable information reading all your replies.
i may have found the culprit to my installation issue - my router settings.
i was in the office when I tried to upload my shopping cart files with no success. the following day, i tried it at home and it published my shopping cart with no problem!
so i'm thinking that it was probably the internet security settings in my office that caused the software to halt is uploading.unfortunately, i may not be able to determine the actual cause since i have no access to it.
anyways, its successfully installed now. thank you guys. this is a great community!
P.S. by the way, the billyjoe.onlineshop.com domain was just fictional and i don't own onlineshop.com as well. thanks!

Thats good news Don.
Yes firewalls, anti virus etc are common culprits preventing the uploads.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.
Glad to hear it Don, grats on getting it uploaded. Not sure what your job is about, but if you're supposed to be able to do this stuff at work, then talking to the techies there might help to open that connection for you. If you're 'not' supposed to be doing this stuff at work then.... nevermind

For those who are interested I finally got my cart working. It took buying a new computer to do it though.

OMG Eric!! Did you find out what was actually doing it though?
Nope. I just took a chance in buying a new computer. Now the new computer came with W7. Whereas I had installed W7 Ultimate on the old computer (old computer came with Vista). So there must be some compatibility issue with W7 ultimate - not sure why, but one other poster had the same exact problem with W7 ultimate. I am just happy I can stop panicing and get my projects done. I think my wife was about to commit me to the crazy house. But all is sane now. yipeeee!

Okay...Eric...fess up...you reallly really really wanted a new computer didn't you!
Wouldn't it have been cheaper to re-install Vista or another OS?

The up side, apart from having a spanking new computer and SCC working again, is that you have an alternate operating system to run programs and test things on.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.
No hiding anything from tassie: the new computer is great, I must admit, but only because the cart works on it. Actually, I tried to reinstall my old system and my whole computer had to get wiped out. Ugggghhhh. Ah well, all in the past. Yipeeee.

Yes reformatting is a pain. I have a nice new hard drive sitting them but putting off installing it as it means everything needs to be reformatted if I do....and all my stuff transferred...
