Sudden problem with Google Webmaster...

All of a sudden I can't get my site to verify. It's been verified since owing SCC, then Pro, so about a year.

I get told to add the meta info as follows:

1. Copy the meta tag below, and paste it into your site's home page. It should go in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.

So I try to verify it again by adding the code it gives me in my footer, and click verify, but I come back with an error:

NOT VERIFIED: "We've detected that your verification file returns a status of 400 (Bad request) in the header."

I'm not sure if google has changed where they want the meta tags. It started 7 days ago according to my webmaster tools history. So maybe the footer won't work anymore?

Can anyone else test this for me on their site if they use webmaster tools & let me know as I'll have to do some more digging around if it's working for everyone else.

Thank you. :)

To add to this: Yahoo had also dropped it out & I had to verify it again. It worked with Yahoo though.

Strange how both of them dropped my verification.... :|

This is what I've been able to find, only I wish I knew what it meant!

400 (Bad request) The server didn't understand the syntax of the request. ...

Just use the other method Google uses by uploading the html file they provide to your site and verify. Done.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

Thanks Tom. I know I can use that method, but I'm wondering why I'm getting this error, since Yahoo got it as well.

It seems Google has an issue reading my home page that it didn't have before.

I was also listed on page 3-4 depending on the week, but I've gone into page 21 odd of Google, and my Home Page isn't appearing in google searches anymore either.

When I use site:url ... it is showing, but clearly not reading my site well enough for the organic search. It's been on page 3 - 4 for months & months.

I'm just concerned there is something up.

The only thing I added, but it was after the history shows the error, was form code for an email link. I did remove it and tried to verify again, but I received the same error.
