I'm one number short on my SKU field (perhaps they are longer in Europe?)

How can I extend the SKU field for my products by 1 digit?

Thanks!

I have never heard of standardized SKU's. Why do you need another digit?:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Ummmm, 'cause the products I sell have 1 more than SCC allows? :D
It's an actual SKU on a bag of Gelert dog food, so I'm not just being awkward.

I don't think there's anyway to add more. You might want to make it a suggestion though.:)

As it is a stock tracking identification for your use, could you use a replacement. I realise it may not be a direct comparison but a look up chart provided that you have no more than say 100 items should be OK to manage.
As Eric advised a support ticket may get a response. Amazon allows for 40 characters and another company 30 so there does not seem a standard that is set. One character short seems a bit of a blow.

Linda, sounds like the product has an EAN/Jan/UCC-13 product code instead of a UPC-A.

The EAN 12 digits is in widespread use in Europe for products. I haven't looked at the CC Shop in a while but I am really surprised that they did not make provision for a 12 digit code.

If CC is referring to the EAN or UPC as a SKU then they are technically not quite correct. SKUs are internal IDs and can be anything you, another retailer, wholesaler or manufacturer wants them to be. EAN and UPCs on the other hand are (or supposed to be) precise individual product IDs that you see as the barcodes on products.

I agree that you do not want to substitute in your shop the product EAN / UPC with something else -- Google and other search platforms do find product by their EAN/UPC IDs and not necessarily someone's SKU.

I would suggest that you drop the last digit which is normally the check digit. The item will normally be found anyway without the check digit.

Anyway, my multiple two cents....:)

12 digits for an EAN, JAN, or UCC-13
11 digits for a UPC-A
7 digits for a UPC-E.

Thanks, Tom.
I'll try dropping that last check digit and see how it goes.

Linda,

Since I now only use the shopping cart as a catalog which has not changed in over a year I went back into the cart details and see that I was mostly correct, but not completely in an important way.

CC has not made provision for UPCs of any sort. The SKU field is as I stated -- an arbitrary data field made up of whatever you wish to use.

I have just made several search tests on Google, Bing and a couple of other search engines with several products with and without the last digit. All of the products were found by the search engines with the full IAN. However, there were mixed results with the dropped last digit; about fifty percent positive. Not an extensive test, but I think enough of a test to say that I recommend you list the full IAN in the description for each product and use the SKU in a manner that makes sense for your business.

Sorry that I might have misled you some in the earlier post, started thinking about it today and decided I had better ensure I gave you correct instead of (as it turned out) only partially correct info.

HTH

Tom
