Can i suggest you number sitemaps, for ease of updating

(ie) sitemap1.xml

then when you have added new pages, and subsequently add a new sitemap, you can tell google your new sitemap details, and go back a week or so later, check it has all referenced and that google has listed all the pages. (more than previous map) then delete its predecessor .

With all due respect Viv, this would unnecessarily complicate, rather than simplify, the updating process!
Instead, when you add or change pages, keep the same name (sitemap.xml) and just overwrite the old one when you upload. Google will download and 'process' the sitemap with regular intervals whether it has been modified or not, so a modified sitemap will be automatically taken into account, but only if it maintains the same name.
You can also submit individual pages to Google for indexing, if you so desire after additions or modifications. To do so, use the "Fetch as Googlebot" option (under "Diagnostics") on your Webmaster dashboard.

Hi Per, was only suggesting it to Norma so that at the outset (new website) she can see her changes

Having followed her in this and other threads she is having similar issues understanding the processes involved that i had 3 years ago, and numbering everything worked for me

And you are correct Per, long term its totally unnecessary, though strangely enough i still do it today with sitemaps, and all my other updates tend to be year dated (ie) this years SCCP shop is named handmade by me May 2012, so i can keep old shops, but never use one in error.

If you have multiple sites you are creating a site map for, I can see changing the name to something else that represents that site even rather than a number, but I think Viv's got a good point there, just needs to go further for multiple sites. If it's for the same site then leave the default sitemap.xml and overwrite as Per suggests. If you have a lot of sites to work on and you're making a sitemap for each of them, then by all means feel free to name it sitemap_shortnameofsitehere.xml so that it represents the particular site it belongs to. Less apt to be confused as which number goes with which site that way too :)

Just some thoughts on it :)

Thanks so much to one and all who have helped in this query: Rolly, Viv, Per, Jo Ann. Please forgive the delay in my reply, I was out of the office all day yesterday. But this morning everything seems to be working well when I do sample searches for both sites. That was making me crazy thinking no one could find me.

Sitemaps for both sites have been submitted and are pending, but Google is acknowledging all the pages, just in the act of submitting the maps. I submitted previously for the one site, but I believe there I made an error in that file path somewhere. I have this thread printed so I don't make this mistake again. I get stuck on the quirkiest things. Thanks again Rolly for helping with that simple item!

I usually do give a name to my files that corresponds with the site name, and date. Like Viv, I have been keeping [my more recent] files, and after 3 or 4 build up I delete the oldest. Because I don't work with the program every day, and because I probably don't understand all the ins and outs of how things work, it makes it easier for me to remember. I do this when I back up on the external hard drive ~ especially then.

One more word that might help someone else. Over the weekend, I submitted information about our physical perennial garden location to 'Google Maps', figuring anyone picking up orders might use it. Google will list your web site and contact information on 'Google Maps' free of charge. If you need to make changes in that info, they call to verify them rather quickly - less than 24 hours in my case.
Within just a few minutes adding my info / web site url, it visibly helped the searches I was testing.

Thank you again!
I am a very happy shop keeper this morning! :):):):):)
