Whole page lost. - VERY long page. -...

I have been transcribing old newspaper articles off of 'photo's of the newspaper page' over the last few days. All has run fine. Sure the page was long as I have gone through half of the 'photo's to be transcribed done. Later I would sort onto a few pages (with a few years to each page) as my ranges are from 1894-1960.

Things were going fine, until I opened up the files today and began to type in, when CC tells me Coffee Cup is out of memory. I couldn't get rid of the message and closed out of CC.

I was working on one article and am sure I 'saved' after placing the 'date/article title' header, and only part way into the article itself.

When I re-opened CC, to this file, the whole page is blank.

What happened?

Of late I have had some issues with CC (either between windows7 or CC itself which is making me VERY unhappy with CC for the first time since it's inception: and find the support here at best WEAK.,

Not sure how you could find weak support here Katherine, but do remember that the forums here are user to user support, not CC company support. If you need CC company support you should open a support topic with them via the Support menu choice at the top of the page.

That said, this issue is something that is known and a release is around the corner to fix it. Sorry you have had to experience it, we've been wracking our fingers and brains for a few weeks to narrow down all the issues and get them reported so I hope you'll be pleased to hear that it's been fixed for the next release. Unfortunately that doesn't fix your page loss and I'm sorry to say I can't fix that either and I feel your pain as it's happened to me numerous times in testing too till we found it. Trust me when I say it's been fixed though and you'll find the next build will no longer do that to you.

Until then please save a good backup of your site while you're working so that if that happens you won't lose the whole thing and will only loose what updates you've been working on. I found keeping a full back up every so often was helpful for this issue. Won't need to do that very long though.

So there is NO recovering my files? No, idea what caused this?

Why release anything that purposely messes things up for people and say 'oh we fixed in the next release'?

This certainly doesn't fix MY issue and to continue working with it at this point.

This is not the 'whole site' I was typing in ONE file, 'save' after each entry or even into an entry. No matter how long short and certainly after each 'dated' article division as I am manually sorting into chrono order (but not typing articles of random dates). So I save 'save' and save'.

How did CC Wipe OUT my whole saved page? It was there yesterday, it was there when I opened CC to this folder and file...

What your saying is CC can erase any file they want at any time. So clearly it is best not to use CC while it is deciding to randomly erase saved files.

Where is the last working version of CC?

These certainly are no improvement.

Kat, have you contacted your Hosting Provider and asked if they can restore the files?

You have never actually opened one support ticket either, so how is support weak? If you don't ask for help, then how are we to know you need it?

I would suggest you do open a support ticket and we can help track down what is going on here for you. At least give us the opportunity to help.

Well it's not like they "intentionally" released it knowing it was going to do this, and once the release is out there it's not like they can just take it back and tell you not to use it etc. They have been killing themselves getting this working right again after that so please understand that it's not something they did on purpose as it sounds like you think they did.

I am sorry you lost your page, to be honest I'm not 100% sure that the CC program did that as it doesn't sound like the same issue if all you had open was one file. Most of the issues that were reported had to do with multiple files open and it could be stopped by not letting it save when it asked to do so. Your situation sounds like it may be something with your computer not with the program itself. I have had the file wipe happen many times in production and in testing until it was fixed, and it is for sure fixed. I never once got any memory errors on it though and the only time the file was ever wiped was if the program asked to save a file that we knew was already saved. This is not the case of what happened to you so really I would check your computer as well to be sure that something else isn't going on there too.

Hi Katherine,

Jo Ann is spot on, as usual.....:)

I too have had a lot of issues with the new release and hopefully things will be sorted and fixed very soon as far as the software goes.

I thought I would just say, as over time I have had a couple of PC's that eventually have gone down,
but still have a good 2.5" hard drive inside... Which I ripped out and kept....

I have found that there are very very neat and slim cases available, just two covers, one has the pcb
in place, and its possible to just shove an old 2.5" hard drive in, pop the cover on and hook it straight
up to a USB port.

Using Robocopy which it comes with windows 7, I wrote a few batch files and can backup my entire system, whatever I want, to this/these drives, on the fly....

Its worth taking the time to do, and is really quite easy, Robocopy is a DOS style programme and has a good help menu to guide you. Backing up your files is literally one click away, and its built in already.
Once a batch file is written, it can be placed as a short cut on your desktop, just hook up a drive, click the short cut............... Job Done!

I have to add too, that I agree with your comments about 'Help'. Sometimes support tickets
are in a sense 'hidden' and there is so much that could be got from a 'Support Thread' option in the main header..... An extra forum entitled, Bug Reports and Fixes, would I think...., be a real asset.

I dont use forums generally, as a rule, but one other I visit occasionally has a ' Bug Reports Forum',
posts are discussed with the software staff and its really BRILLIANT!
You actually KNOW that its being looked into, with the staff even reporting on things with new threads, updating and informing users of current affairs and updates!

There is nothing worse, than being in the dark!

Regards
Peter

SirAge: My Hosting Provider has nothing to do with this issue. I had not sent this file to the server as yet as I was in the process of building the pages (adding data).

@ Scot: I doubt I'll open a ticket as I don't feel inclined to re-open CC to in an attempt to have this error occur. I'm wishing I would have made a screen shot of the error. But it was IN the coffee cup program not a windows error.

Hiya Katherine,

I wish I could say something to make you realize that it will get better. I understand your frustration, many of us do. The team here is extremely diligent in their support when asked and unfortunately if you don't open a ticket they can't help you with this either.

I do understand the error was from the editor, but what I meant was that the memory problem itself wouldn't have been caused by the error which may mean something else on your computer caused the memory problem which led to the editor not having enough memory and having to close. Hopefully that makes more sense.

SirAGE does have a point though that I think you missed. I think what he's asking is if you can contact your hosting provider to see if they have a backup of the site that they can get you. This would restore the page you lost at least to the last updated state. Many hosting providers keep backups of their clients sites for X number of days so I wouldn't wait too long to ask them if you need that page replaced. Our hosting company just a couple years ago was only keeping them for a few days, now they keep them for 30 which is more reasonable, but who knows what yours keeps theirs for so I would contact them soon to see if you can get a backup copy.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
