I just updated to the html editor 12. I was previously using Coffeecup html editor 2008. I did the backup as it suggested. Once it downloaded, I started it up and ALL my files are gone! I cannot find the files I was working on before the update. Why on earth would doing an update overwrite files and projects?

I don't know if this fits your case, but previously, and especially on WinXP and earlier, the 'working' folder of all the CC software was located in 'program files/CoffeeCup Software'. With Vista and Win7 it was not possible to save files to that location, so from then on CC creates a folder 'CoffeeCup Software' in 'My Documents', and that is where your files will be stored. Well, this is an attempted answer to your question. If you have your work uploaded to a server, you can retrieve all your files and folders from there. I'm not sure if you will get your missing files and folders back if you do a system restore to some day before you updated the Editor, but you could try.

Anyway, it is always recommended to take a backup of important files before you update something.
Ha en riktig god dag!

You could just use Windows explorer with a search fro one of the files you know existed before the update, starting in "Computer".
:D

I also have read this same question somewhere else in the forums, had something to do with 32bit vs 64.

Another thing to make sure is that you back up your files to a separate location completely outside of anything to do with CC products themselves or even anywhere near your normal site files. I have an external drive that I back everything up to when I'm doing updates on many things even those not of CC products, just to be sure my working files are never lost.

I'm guessing that what Inger mentioned is most likely the culprit though, that your projects were inside the CC folders themselves rather than in separate areas.

One thing though, anytime I've ever deleted or updated anything from CC it hardly ever messes with my data files, but.... I have never gone with an upgrade from such and old version to a newer one, why the wait? Anyways, I'm going to bet that the version dates have something to do with it. Good luck on it, hopefully your files are backed up somewhere else, like online? If you have them uploaded then you haven't lost them, just redownload them :)

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
