Struggling with Projects in 2009 -...
After struggling with the Projects Manager in older versions, I decided to give this a whirl again. The first question I've run across, is when I have a Project Open, how can I upload an image file to a designated sub directory for images on the server? I've only seen a way to right click and upload the selected files to the root directory.
Another question that comes to mind right off hand, do I need to go in and change my settings for my working folder each time I change projects? I don't understand why I'm having to have my files in one directory, my Project Files in another directory, and the working directory is important why?
Thanks
Tim

Ok, I'm still working on this and getting more confused. There doesn't seem to be a lot of help on the Projects Mgr. and how to manipulate it in detail. I've read everything I can find and it seems to be a pretty generic description. I tried setting up new projects for all my active web site directories, one of them shows up by name in the drop down list from the file menu 4 times. {My Websites | All Web Site Projects list.} Only one of them would actually open the project. I decided to change the location of the project files to the default set up by CC, thinking that must be what is preferred, now none of my files open up with the project.
Why does CC look for the project files, by default, in the CoffeeCup Project Files Folder in My Documents, when I've set the file path to be elsewhere?
Would it be better for me to start again from scratch and move all my current web site directories to CC's preferred Project Folder so when CC prompts me, they would all be right where the window opens when looking for them?
I also noticed, as per my post above, that I have to click out of My Websites tab to My Computer Tab to upload anything to other than my root directory on the server. This must have been an oversight, as it was a very useful feature. Now, if I use the project files, that option will require another few steps to locate the file elsewhere. I'm not yet convinced that I can even function using the Project Files. When you access the upload to server option outside of your project files, you can add numerous sub-folders and designate which one to upload to.
Hope this doesn't confuse you more than I am.

There is no need to struggle, that is what we are here for

You actually don't need to do anything special to upload your Website Project files to a specific folder on your server. When you upload a file from the My Websites tab, the file structure is automatically preserved.
Let's say you have a folder in your Website Project called images, and in this folder is a file called header.png. Now let's say you wanted to upload header.png to a folder on your server called images. All you'd have to do is right-click header.png and select Upload Selected Files. Website Projects will automatically upload the file into the images folder on your server in order to preserve the file structure from your Website Project. This ensures that all the relative paths are correct and that none of your images (or other document dependencies) will be referenced incorrectly.
What happens if there isn't an images folder on your server? Easy: Website Projects creates that folder for you.
If for whatever reason you really want to upload a file to a specific folder outside of the file structure in your Website Project, switch to the My Computer tab. Next, use the file browser to find and open your Website Project folder. From there, you can right-click a file and upload it to whichever folder on your server you want. We don't recommend using this method unless you really know what you're doing, since you could run the risk of messing up your relative links.
If you want to add a file to your Website Project, the proper way to do this is to locate it using the My Computer tab, right-click it, and select Copy File to Project > [Website Project folder where you want it to be stored]. Then you can upload your file from the My Websites tab.
As to your other question. When you are working inside of a project, that will become your default working directory. Everything you add or save will default to that location. We do this so that all files are referenced properly when uploading.

First, to remove the project files in the My Websites list that are not working, click My Websites, then Remove Website Project.
To set where you want your Website Projects to be saved, click on Tools, Preferences, the Folders. The first option is your Website Projects Folder. You can browse to the folder you want.
I have several websites on a single server, so I set up a profile for each one so that I can choose where to upload to and I have no problems uploading.

Have you had a chance to read over the new PDF manual included? We have added extensive information on how projects work in there. Our technical writer put in many overnighters to make that as comprehensive as possible

It sounds like you gave each of your projects the same Website Project Name. This is why you see them listed multiple times. What I suggest you use for the project name is the actual domain name. It makes it much easier to distinguish them from one another. I would recommend going through each of them and edit the Website Project Settings and update the project names.

I haven't responded because I was awaiting notification of any replies to my post and didn't get it, although I am subscribed to the topic. Either way, my projects were all named the particular domain name, and when I uploaded an image from within a project file and uploaded it, it went to the root folder, not the image folder on the ftp server. I keep all my images in a sub-folder from the root called "images". I'll work on it some more, It just seems to be about as easy to change the default working folder each time I need to work on a particular site.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help.

I might add, here it is a long time later. I've still agonized over reading about and trying to understand these project folders. I'm so screwed up now I'm looking for a way to avoid projects all together. Why was a Home folder created with my sites FTP hierarchy listed in the project folder, along with my original files that I imported to the project? So when I started uploading from within my project, I found that updates to my pages were not reflecting, I have duplicate html files. I created the project from scratch using the Project Tab (which is a pain to remember to use) instead of File Open or start a new web site project icon.
Hopefully I can still use CoffeeCup, after all these years, without using the My Websites tab or Project thing....
There is a BenjisHome Directory where I created the project. Beneath that is a Home folder (that I did not create) with sub-directory of Public, with sub-directory containing only two html files of all the files in my project. Why are these here?
Then there is an "images" directory under BenjisHome that do correctly contain the images.
Then below that in the BenjisHome Directory there are the three HTML files of my web site.
How is one supposed to know which of these duplicate files I should be editing and uploading?
