HTML Editor adds blank lines when...

Hiya Peter,

We do see someone many times, mostly Scott, but sometimes J or Lucia and a few others at times, but the main thing is that their Support system logs things for them and gives them a much better way to track issues. Having to keep up with the forums for every issue be it large or small would be a horrendous thing to expect a company to do. I don't know very many at all that do it this way unless they are a little 1 man company. The ticket system is better for both them and us as this way we don't lose what's going on either as it keeps a running conversation going for the entire issue that you can go back to at any time without wading through a zillion forums to find a specific post.

Not to mention... can you imagine the mess of bookmarks that CC would have to keep to be able to keep following specific threads? A nightmare in itself lol. Definitely a Support Ticket is the best way to make sure things are handled in a more orderly environment. :)

To put everyone's mind at ease on the subject of copy and paste: I have used nothing but plain text editors since I started web programming in 1998. (I have been criticized numerous times for this by those who think I am doing things the slow, hard way. But when they run into a problem, guess who they come to!) I started with ASP coding and VB Script. I have used nearly all flavors of those including the VBA background to PCOMM communications software. Integrating JavaScript and moving to PHP for image handling. I now use PHP for nearly all my interactive web applications. I have programmed interactive applications that uploaded, downloaded and processed data through FTP live connections. Nearly all types of database applications including MS SQLServer, MySQL, MS Access, and in the old days (early 90's) Rbase, dBase, Alpha4. I have set up screen read / write applications that interfaced with DMV Tag and Title apps using Winbatch. Even creating web hosted .exe files to read web forms and calculate and return data needed to complete detailed transactions automatically.

In all of this the first thing I learned is: DON"T use a program that adds formatting characters and if you suspect code contamination, run it through a PLAIN TEXT EDITOR.

As I said before: The problem will probably not be an issue for someone who just uses the HTML Editor to work on the file locally then upload to the server. However if the file does get uploaded then for some reason the web version needs to be downloaded to the editor then re-uploaded THEN is when the issue MAY show up. It MAY NOT!

The Bad Code issue is probably not the issue as I have used this same code, or the same type of code, numerous times with other plain text editors and have no trouble. In fact, the editor I normally use actually accesses the live copy from the web, I edit it and on save it is uploaded directly back and is saved over the web version. Live update! I would think that if "Bad code" were an issue, it would have been doing its thing all those numerous times of download, edit, save / upload.

That said, I would like to know what you mean by 'bad code'. Could you give me an example of some bad code that might cause this type of problem?

I am always open to looking at new ways to refine and improve my programming.

Anyway: Please don't loose any sleep over this. I am resigned to the idea that it was a one time fluke that could happen to anyone given hardware / software / Internet hosting / etc. combinations.

And, as I said I do appreciate your responses and interest.

I will run some further tests on my own and if the problem is duplicated in a consistent manor and I can pinpoint the issue, I will start a ticket and follow up.

Thanks again!

Chuck

Chuck, I would suggest you open a support ticket and provide support with some sample pages so they can test it. I understand if you do not feel comfortable giving them the files, but they are needed to figure out the problem... Give them a ring and see what they can do for you...

I will be testing this myself and seeing if I can get it to replicate.

Chuck,
Have you tried the "Code Cleaner" in the CC HTML Editor yet?

Hello

Yes Jo Ann, you are right, and I do understand and of course I will.

Its a tough job to do and the team and people here trying hard
to sort things out for us all.

I shall watch and see what happens about this problem, its an interesting one
though isn't it.

Sometimes I am far too vocal for my own good

With luck the new release will be along shortly too

Peter :)

No worries Peter,

Sometimes it takes someone to voice their opinions to help others realize why things are the way they are. If we never questioned things, we'd never get answers :)

Chuck, if I have understood you correctly, it's during the upload those spaces are being added?

How do you upload? Which programme are you using?

I remember there was something with CC's DFTP, that it would add blank lines, but that is some 5 years ago, and as far as I know it has been long fixed.

And as for letting us have an url: could you create a page, just add some 'lorem ipsum', maybe a picture and a link to somewhere (CC e.g.) and upload it the same way as you have done your real site? And then let us have that url?
Ha en riktig god dag!

I uploaded using the save button from the HTML Editor it is set up with the server link that takes it to the proper folder.

I will let you know when I have a file to show.

Thanks

I do have a question that you will no doubt be able to answer easily. I am testing the upload and I can't find a consistent sequence. I have a file that I am testing which I edit and save.

If I edit the file and select the save button it usually only saves it to the local folder.
But on occasion it uploads automatically to the server. I still haven't figured out why it does sometimes and not others.

I thought it was perhaps because the program saw that the file was already on the server, but that didn't really make sense because, if I were editing the file, and wanted to see the results on the web, I would probably want it to upload. But I can see reasons why I might not so I tried deleting the server copy and it still didn't upload automatically. But then one time I did have a copy on the server and an edited copy and pressing save caused it to upload. Most of the time to get a copy on the server I had to go to the FTP Upload option.

Any ideas as to the inconsistency?? Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting that causes it to upload sometimes when conditions are correct??

I did get it to duplicate the line add problem twice when the automatic upload worked. I still am unsure what exact sequence caused it. One time I had the file open in another editor at the time of upload. I thought that might have been the problem but, the second time I didn't have it open. And, most of teh time it does upload correctly without adding anything.

When I get a good handle on the sequence I will upload the results and we can go from there. I didn't want to bother Scott and the gang until I am sure it is not a problem on my end.

Sorry Per: I did run the file through the code cleaner and it made no changes and it was after that that the second line add sequence happened.
