HTML Editor 12.6 Build 448 becomes...

I just thought I would post this...

The latest version is working ok, but has a very regular
habit, when I close it using the 'X' button in the top right corner of a window, of becoming immediately unresponsive, the screen glazing over and a windows dialogue popping up saying the program is not responding....

I will do a support ticket, but thought I would post here too

Let us know what support says. :D

Wooo... A loaded question if ever there was one.... Well you only live once I suppose...

I have been told to set the editor to run as administrator.... Not something I usually have to do with any other software....

I have also mentioned that my Norton installation regularly flags the HTML Editor as having very high CPU usage. On maximizing the editor, I cannot close the program by normal means as its locked up.

This ONLY happens with the HTML editor. NO other software installed in my PC does it!.

Now, I am only saying what I think, and I mentioned this as i thought it may be useful, but sometimes responses from support need a lot to be desired. As my answer to this, was "I can tell you from experience that anti-virus applications are more trouble than they are worth"

That was IT, the tech help...

All I know is I manage my system pretty well, its organised, its not a plaything and I understand how it works. I can build and configure PC's

The editor has undergone a major rebuild, and now it has, in my case anyway, got high memory issues that I don't know how to address.

I have read somewhere here that its something that is known about and is being looked into.

Sometimes an informed rather than flippant answer would be nice, that's all

Peter, you totally only took one small sentence of an entire support ticket. ;)

Norton itself uses more resources that any other anti-virus application though. I personally never and will never install one myself. They cause far more problems then they are ever worth. They simply touch way too many facets of your operating system that it becomes easy to point the fingers at one company when the fault lies with another. Yes, I am talking to you Mr. Norton! :)

Running a program as an Administrator is actually more common then you think. It simply depends on your system setup and how your anti-virus programs, firewalls or other security programs are configured. That is just the gamble you risk when installing those programs. Ultimately they should be helping, but I have found for years, they simply ALWAYS do more harm then good.

So don't shoot the messenger if you don't like the answer to your question. ;)

My 3 cents anyways. ;)

@ peter. It's got to be a local issue because I have the editor, Excel, Microsoft picture manager and Photoshop all running at the same time and everything is working fine. I only have Microsoft essentials for antivirus.:) I set every program to run as Admin.;)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

I tend to agree with Scott when it comes to his views on antivirus software.

My computers have been much more reliable and problem-free after I finally dumped McAfee a couple of years ago. I had used McAfee for several years but had also become increasingly suspicious that it could be the cause of some inexplicable performance problems that I sometimes saw. The final straw, however, was the disastrous update issued by McAfee in April, 2010, which shut down lots of machines around the world, including one of mine. When I finally got it running again a couple of days later, I was determined never to use that kind of software again!

Like Eric, I'm using MS Security Essentials, which seems to be quite lean and unobtrusive. It also has the benefit of being free!

Playing Devil's Advocate here I disagree on the Antivirus Software as far as not running one, but I do agree that many of them are very very restrictive and Norton is just major bloatware. I use PC Tools Internet Security and I have very few issues with any software. I use Malwarebytes subscription so it's always running, and I have very little issues with any software. Once in a while a software gets tagged as spyware or similar, but they usually correct it quite quickly if you report it. Other than that, I don't have many issues with my security software at all.

I DO run most any program I install as Admin so I don't have to mess with them. I have no problem with doing that, and if you don't have a billion people sharing your computer that shouldn't be an issue for anyone. It's how Windows works (or *coughs* doesn't work) and there's not much we can do about that. Software companies can only bend so much to Microsoft's stupid way of setting things up, don't blame them for that lol.

Anyways, yes use security software, but no don't use Norton, McCaffee or CA. They are mostly bloatware and very ineffective compared to many of the others.

If Norton is flagging the HTML Editor, then something else is causing it to do so. Like many others here I usually run HTML Editor, Paint Shop Pro X4 Ultimate, NotePad ++, Firefox and at least 1 other browser, Wikmail Mail Client, Task Coach time manager, a very old calendar program, Microsoft OneNote, CC's Shopping Cart Creator/Designer Pro (both), CC's Web Color Schemer, MS Excel, Malwarebytes, PC Tools, Roboform, Phrase Express and various other programs, and I have no issues at all with anything overprocessing in any way.

@Peter G - just curious, does the problem persist even after you do the Shell Hardware Detection service restart?

FWIW - I am not having that problem on my system (Vista 64). Not running any programs "as an administrator". Though I did have a problem a couple of years back with the CC Website Color Schemer that required me to run it as an administrator. The latest version runs fine without elevated privileges.

As far as the antivirus programs go:
Tried Norton - fat footprint and really slowed down my system.
Tried McAffee - very intrusive and there were unacceptable uninstall issues. Had to download a separate program to do an uninstall.

Been running ESET for a couple of years now and am very happy with it's performance.

I've learned to live with the Norton Bloatware, but I don't tend to have a ton of apps open at the same time... usually just three or four.

I've noticed a severe slowdown in the Editor's response on my machine when I use the F11 external previewer. There's also a long delay in the editor's window when I modify some code in that window, and it seems to take a long time for the Editor's window to catch up. It seems like the previewer's the major factor. It becomes faster to F4 upload after saving the file and then switch to IE8 and refresh! Not a happy "solution."

One thing I have noticed, and apparently with the 448 release, is that when I SHRINK the Editor's window, some part of the top bar doesn't go away unless I open another app that overwrites that part of video memory or do a refresh of the entire desktop.

I think someone missed something somewhere.. :)

My guess is you have a script running on your page Alan and that script is causing some issues (not the scripts fault purely). Much of this will be fixed in the next release, but for now check your scripts to see what you have on the page and comment it out and see if that fixes that loading issue for the Preview window(s). If so, try to put up with it just a little longer and hopefully the next release will fix that for you like it has for a bunch of us testers :) If you don't need the script that might be causing issues to run in the preview, just comment it out when you're editing the page and then uncomment it when you're done. That will save a lot of reload time.

Best you can do for now, but trust me they are on this issue and it's been reported by us already and most of it has been addressed already :)
