the older versions of CC worked fine....but since they moved it and you can't choose where to install it I am having problems... so the problem is with CC... because YOU CAN'T CHOOSE WHERE TO INSTALL THE SOFTWARE (at least I was not able to find how to do it)
Ricardo,
Two steps:
1. Make sure you know where the CC HTML Editor executable (i.e. Coffee.exe) is located. Right-click the Editor icon and click on "Properties". Under the "Shortcut" tab, look for "target", which gives you the full path to "Coffee.exe".
2. Right-click on any php file and choose "Open with". If the Editor is not listed among the suggested programs, click on "Other Programs" and navigate to "Coffee.exe". Confirm on the dialog box that the Editor should be the default program to open php files, -and you're done!
The next time you double-click on a php file, it should open for editing in the Editor. If it does not, you most likely have some system-related glitch that is unrelated to Coffeecup.

been there and done that... several times... doesn't solve the problem... I still use XP SP3 and won't move from it (I would still be on Win2k Pro if it was possible)...
CC changed everything so that it could work with the newer OS (Vista, 7, 8) and ignored those who will continue using XP for a while
This is a good thing to know! I don't have .php, but when I do I will be using CC Editor

Ricardo,
Both of those statements are incorrect. You can associate any file type with the Editor and you can choose which directory you want to install the software to.
For installation, it is actually the first step of the installer:
http://www.coffeecup.com/files/forums/editorinstaller.png
For file association:
Just right-click on any file and modify the OPENS WITH to use the Editor. This will work for ANY file type.
http://www.coffeecup.com/files/forums/editorphp.png
If you cannot do the file association part, give this a try:
1. Close the Editor
2. Start > Run and then type Regedit
3. Delete the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Coffee.exe
4. Now try to file associate something with the Editor now.
Only 6 more months until the edit of all XP support, so time to upgrade that system!

I guess 'edit' should read 'exit'??

Ricardo,
Like you and many others, I was very comfortable with XP and used it for a lot of years. I skipped Vista entirely and eventually went with Win7 on a new machine. Because of all the problems people had with Vista, I was wary of weaning myself of XP but, for me, Windows7 proved to be a major improvement over XP with few, if any, of the Vista ailments. I am very happy I belatedly switched and have used Win7 now for a couple of years with no regrets!
No need to wait til the last minute; - take the plunge and move over to Win7! Windows8, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about!
Maybe I'll treat it as another 'Vista' and wait for 9 or 10...
