Keeping single page website size...

Hi Forum
I like the idea of a single page website with smooth scrolling between sections.
An obvious benefit might be increased information for SEO. (Please correct me if I've got that one wrong. I expect it's more down to how much you pay Google for Adwords!! But I don't really know! )
The obvious problem might be the large size and then very slow loading time (most recommendation say keep it down to below at least 500kb.
I'm thinking of including a gallery so this introduces an instant spanner in the works.
Has anyone dealt with this situation before and know the work rounds.
Thanks T.

It's fine. Use common sense and keep image file sizes as small as possible.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Tim you could also use different sized images for mobile and smaller breakpoints and only use the larger higher res images on the desktop sized breakpoints. This will help only loading the really large images when the user is on a desktop system. Just make sure you size and compress each image the best you can for each of the sizes, etc.

Thanks Jeff and Eric
I guess I had in mind something that might split the page up so that its not loading all at once. I didn't know wether that was possible or not so I guess is the 'be sensible answer'
Thanks Tim

I'm not sure if there's a specific way to load elements in a specific order. I think different browsers might handle those things slightly differently. I think the HTML is loaded from the top down but not sure if that applies to CSS or other elements. I think if you are able to use the appropriate size images for each of the breakpoints you'll have the best performance that way. :)
