Unable to connect with Direct FTP...

I can happily connect to my web host's ftp server using:

1. CuteFTP
2. Some code using Chilkat's FTP component in VB6
3. via the 'MS-DOS' cmd command box

I put the same criteria into Direct FTP (ftp server name, user name, password) and no matter how many times I toggle the Passive option I cannot get a connection through.

I am running Windows 7 and, for the time being, the Internet Security has been suspended (Kaspersky).

I was hoping that there would be a client side error log that I could copy and paste through showing the Direct FTP error codes but, at the moment, I can't locate that.

I am clearly doing something wrong but I can't figure out what.

The host system is a Windows server, if that helps.

Any ideas what I ought to do next, please?

As an addendum (in the stickies), we're asked to include the URL to the website.

It is www.ukhorseracing.co.uk and the ftp server is 'ftp' replacing the 'www' part.

Hope this helps.

Don't know which web host you are using, but here is what I have on a GoDaddy Linux host...

Nickname can be anything you want.

your server should be ukhorseracing.co.uk Do not include the www. or ftp:

username
password

Use passive mode, port 21, 1 connection.

If you cannot connect, do you get an error message? Or does it just time out?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, I removed the ftp. part of the hostname and there was a timeout error:

There was a problem connecting to your host or proxy. Please check your server settings and try again. If you are sure you have entered the correct information, please contact your network administrator or the server administrator. [7] Additional information: couldn't connect to host.

This would happen with any combination of Kaspersky turned on or off, Passive mode or not.

I can confirm that I am using Port 21 and 1 connection.

Just to be sure that it wasn't the host's site being wobbly I fired up CuteFTP and was in my website in seconds.

I checked my CuteFTP settings and there I am using:
Port 21
Server Type: Auto Detect
Data Connection Type: Use PORT
Protocol Type: FTP

And that just connects in a blink of an eye.

When I check my own code in my applications I am doing pretty much the same thing except that in my FTP code I am making sure that the Passive mode is off.

So, I am absolutely baffled here.

Ok, I've had similar problems in the past. Believe it or not, it came down to a username/password typo. If Cute FTP can connect, then Direct FTP can connect. Be very sure you have the password/username typed in correct. If you can't find the problem then you probably need to open a support ticket and let CoffeeCup help you out. The program works great on all servers and really is a dream to use once you have it up and running.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Sadly, I have copied and pasted the username and password umpteen times.

I will experiment with other web hosts in case that's the issue.

Hi Malcolm,

To help verify that DFTP is installed correctly, can you set up a free S-Drive account and see if you can connect to it from within DFTP: https://www.coffeecup.com/sdrive/.

Also, can you look at the menu: Actions->Transfer Mode and see if it's set to Auto, Binary or ASCII.

Let us know how you get on :)

David

I have created a S-Drive account and I can ftp into that (Heimdal.coffeecup.com) so that shows that something is working.

I have just tried to make an ftp connection to another Windows based server, dragondrop.com, and the same issues happen; i.e. I can't connect.

I am going to try to make a connection to a non-Windows website.

Further to my previous post I tried to connect to a non-Windows web server, LlynPhotography.co..uk and I can confirm that it does connect to a non-Windows ftp server.

But it doesn't connect to any Windows servers that I am hosted with, which is a bit of a pain as I do a lot of stuff with ASP.

The Transfer Actions seems to make no difference and, besides, don't they come into play after a connection?
