I can't find any indication that I can do this in DirectFTP............. I need a way to search for text, phrases, paths, etc in file names and within files.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

If it's within an HTML file you can open the file in the editor within DirectFTP and it has a toolbar above the text that has a search setup on it. Right now all we seem to be able to edit are HTML files though. I don't believe it's capable of searching for files themselves though. I'll see if I can take a look around and see on it, but I don't recall that as a feature anywhere.

Thanks for responding Jo Ann.

I need to search inside hundreds of files for string of text (malware) and looking for quickest way to do this.

For some reason, I thought I would be able to do this with DirectFTP.

I don't want to have to open every file. Need something like a Windows Explorer Search to search inside files.

I have never used Putty - can I search for string inside many files at once using it?

Thanks for any help / suggestions.

Not sure on the Putty, it sounds like you're trying to do remote files only? If so then hopefully someone else will have some idea of what you can use as I don't do a lot of the remote stuff myself, I pretty much download what I need to check for, but in your circumstances if you're looking for malware that's probably not a good idea to download them lol.

GL on it Sally and hopefully someone will have some assistance or ideas for you :)

If its files on your computer then a Malware program would be better, if they are online then you may be able to find an online program that will scan a website for you.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said...but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not exactly what I meant.

You would let a desktop malware app to "clean" hundreds of files of malware? That is mighty brave of you. :) Better back em up first. :D

If someone hacks your site and inject code into all your php pages and scripts, your desktop malware app is most likely not going to identify the string as a threat.

I think that what you are asking is beyond the scope of any FTP program. Is this of any help:
