It could be an isolated issue, but my instance of DirectFTP was extermely slow, and also seemed to have hiccups here and there. I hate to say it, but I went back to FileZilla.
I feel that Coffee Cup software is a great idea, but the DirectFTP software didn't cut it for me. I may be on a different level of "use and abuse" due to my profession.

To be honest, when I tested the latest version it still had some issues with large numbers of very large (25MB plus times about twenty) files, especially if you had more than two threads open. With smaller files, even hundreds of them, it was very fast and responsive.
You might try reducing the number of threads to just 1 or 2 and see whether that helps.
